I went to a site called Handbrake.com cuz a book I bought to help me with this iPhone said to. I cant make heads or tails of how the site works.

So does anybody know any way that dear old Cas might use to copy movies off his DVDs onto his iPhone for his personal use.

depends on what the DVD is, if it's a store brought one, there will be encryption in place to stop you transferring it to your computer.

You need to rip the DVD and remove the encryption first (this will depend on if you are on windows or mac)

Then you can use handbrake to convert the DVD (which will be vob files) to a format that the iphone will be able to handle

How do I rip a DVD?

I did open the folder on the DVD and it is full of those V__ files. (*sigh* I wish RJ would go back to showing the whole fucking thread when replying!)

And how on Handbrake do I convert the files? ... I looked at the site and cant make heads or tails of the links.

hmm if I recall your on windows... I haven't done it in a few years on windows so I don't know how to rip a DVD on there

    handbreak though
    http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

    Download the windows GUI one

then on there you'll need to choose your source, then on the right there is a draw you can slide out and in that you can make preset selections for different devices including the iphone, choose the iphone and click start and it'll convert the ripped files

    You're a genius, lil!!!

    But I am idiot.

I cant get the browse button to insert my destination folder. I made a folder on my hard drive with the movie's name. I click browse and go to the folder, but the folder's path doesnt go into the destination field. What good is the browse button for if it doesnt fill in the destin. field?!?

Ok I got the destination path. Handbrake accidently closed and when I reopened it, it prompted me and told me how to do it.

man, you could watch the movie in the amt of time this is gonna take.

if you've ripped the files already and removed the protection, then it'll convert it.

the iphone only supports the h.264 which is a resource intensive codec to encode into, it'll take a while but you should get a nice sized file, good quality image and good sound.

when it's done you'll need to put the video into itunes then just set it to sync.

Is it supposed to just sit and catch its breath at 14.63%? Should I start over?

They are going to take a while and may use much of your computer resources. As it's been mentioned, converting to h.264 is processor intensive. (I WISH the iPhone/iPod Touch took Xvid files.)

I usually kick them off before going to bed and then add them to i-Tunes the next morning.

Ripping/converting movies is very time consuming, even if you have a speedy computer. You're better off just downloading from torrents. icon_neutral.gif

It should have downloaded to your computer (in i-Tunes) when you bought it. Then if your iPhone isn't set up to automatically sync, you'll have to do it manually by clicking the sync button.

in itunes when you connect your phone on the right hand side, you have options under the iphone, in there will be a movies tab under the movies tab you can choose what movies you want to be synced to your iphone or have all of them synced

i cant find the sync button...i have looked and looked. itunes is not intuitively obvious to me. If i ever get anything to happen, it always seems to be by accident and I can never repeat it.

    yup.

I used DVDshrink before, and only because I would actually copy them over to a blank dvd for later use, and it takes FOREVER.

longer to burn than to rip, as well.

i cant drag teh movie to the phone either.

I am giving up for tonight. I see why only the young use these things...they are the only ones with enough life left to wait for them to process.

    ok this is bullshit....

I apparently got a rented movie down on my phone from one computer. But I cant get a movie down that i bought from another computer, cuz it wants to sync libraries and the one on the phone will be overwritten.
