    one of the grand memorials on the Mall in Washington, DC, Abraham Lincoln is sculpted sitting down by Daniel Chester French . But he also appears to be doing something. What does it look like that old AL might be doing?

    Boy, you guys answer all these questions so quickly.

    Daniel Chester French was a friend of Alexander Graham Bell. AGB, famous as the inventor of the telephone, was actually interested in teaching the deaf and hearing impaired. (The telephone was originally conceived as an amplifier from the hearing impaired). Bell was promoting the finger alphabet and signing for the deaf. So French sculpted Lincoln as vaguely signing his initials.
