I joined my gym (back in '94) as ownership was switching from one chain to another. I bought a $400-something two year membership to work out at one location. When the change of ownership took place, 24 Hour Fitness offered, for a $70 one-time fee, a $10/month charge to join ALL their gyms. I'm pretty good about working out 2-3 times a week. So, they stopped making money off of me a long time ago. They did make some of it back when I moved to NYC where there are no 24 Hour Fitness locations, so I couldn't work out. I kept up the payments because I was pretty sure I was going to move back in 3-5 years. And I made it to 3 1/2.

I quit buying anything but month-to-month memberships years ago, for all the reasons mentioned in the article.

When I first joined 24 Hour Fitness, I bought a three year package up-front (I trusted to luck that a large chain like that might be around for that period of time). My yearly membership now is like $48.00. And again, since I work out 3-4 times a week, it's hard to beat it. Evben if they go out of business tomorrow, I came out way ahead.

"Walker tells me there was no indication the club was in financial trouble. In fact, she says the center was taking membership applications the day before it closed."

That just aint right. That cries "intent to defraud"

My gym is pretty well-established and reputable, but I often have to argue over my renewal rate (they sometimes try to convince me that it's twice what it actually is).
