I just read the article about how France is seeking to ban the wearing of burqas. It obviously lead me to think about racial profiling. In this time of terrorism, how do you feel about racial profiling? I for one am for it. I totally understand the right to privacy, but at the same time, I think national security and the social good usurps the right to privacy. Plus, if you got nothing to hide, what is the big deal? I think all middle-eastern people should be screened harder at airports, harbors, etc. Again, if they have nothing to hide, how bad is it in light of protecting innocent?

    Evil isn't necessary, ever.

Evil isn't necessary but, unfortunately, it's a reality of life and we can't just bury our heads in the sand and pretend that the majority of terrorists trying to bring down planes, bomb subways, and destroy western civilization don't come from middle east origin. It's very sad that those doing this are giving all people of middle eastern decent or muslim heritage this kind of unfair stigma, but it's a reality. All we can hope for is that the innocent people being profiled will understand that it has to be done, and that those doing the profiling will be as respectful and understanding as possible.

The burqa issue is more about one's religious liberties so comparing it to racial profiling is erroneous. A more valid comparison will be is should Christians be allowed to wear or show crucifixes in an Islamic dominated society. From your statement, there is a suggestion that only middle-eastern people should be screened harder at airports and other ports of entry. What if a Caucasian muslim wearing a burqa or hijab walks in for processing? (They do exist...Cat Stevens converted to Islam years ago) Is this person allowed the same stringent requirements that others go through as well?

I equate racial profiling to buying a breed of dog; one chooses what is deemed best because a certain breed is capable of such duties, whereas one breed is avoided or vilified because of whatever personal prejudice one has against that breed.

Regarding social security, America's domestic terrorists pose a greater threat than those abroad. The best way international terrorism will severely affect the nation is if its propaganda reaches a vulnerable individual who somehow feels maligned and disenfranchised by the Western society.

O ya thanks, it is awesome to be constantly racially profiled. I love it. It is great that John Smith can walk through security but I have never gotten through once with out extra screening, bomb screening, questioning, or the new full body scan (cause it is cool to have your naked body on display to everyone in line, right?)

It is stupid. My sister-in-law is a pure white Slovak girl, her last name is like mine. She got pulled over for a "random" check with three veiled Muslim women. "Random" is the key word.

Racial profiling is dumb and at the core RACIST.

What will you say next when we have terror attacks from white people? How will you white people react? I can't wait to hear the uproar when (heaven forbid) a white person is higher by Osama to attack the US.

Racial profiling is the dumbest way to stop terror attacks. Everyone is a possible threat. That is how one should treat it.

You are right on this. Everyone usually think it is fine to profile someone just as long as they are not the ones being profiled.

I lookforward to the day when everyone is being profiled. We'll then see how some of you like it

Pinny, I totally understand your frustration on this topic and, as I said, it's really sad that we have come to this. However, it's a very sad reality that the world lives in now. But, as others said, people with nothing to hide have nothing to be worried about. We have to be vigilant to stay one step ahead of those evil people who would do harm if not checked.

I have nothing to hide, but I think racial profiling is stupid. You check for behaviors, not skin color. Someone already mentioned it and I'll say it again, while we're busy focusing on a certain race, we won't notice someone of another race doing suspicious activities.

That's how complacency forms and then leads to focusing on one race over others.

We should also screen veterans and white people more.

    ted_kaczynski.jpg

We should also screen college professors and white people.

    eric-robert-rudolph-mugshot.jpg

We should also screen Catholics and, again, white people.

    091105.Bruce.Edwards.Ivins.jpg

We should screen Biologists and white people.

    kkk.jpg

Hm, and though I can't see what color they are under the robe, I wonder if we could profile these people for the thousands of murders, arsons, and other terrorist acts.

as someone who used to be in and out of airports at least 8-10 times per month, i can tell you that being profiled gets old very quickly. especially when the "random" search always randomly targets you. and said random search never ever randomly picks your blue eyed companion travelling with you.

i had nothing to hide either... but it soon became an imposition... i would love to see the day when you and everyone else are searched on every single occasion. i look forward to your reaction then

I ask myself how long it will be before we have the 30+ minute interviews for every passenger, as they do in Israel. Empty the suitcases, test the products, cross check the stories of people "flying together".

We've had it easy for so long, I'm not sure I want to "rough it" like that.

Bijock, Curious, and Black all raise a logical point: "Nothing to hide".

That is so true. None of us do, but as Black said, it gets so old when one is constantly pulled aside, scrutinized, embarrassed, patronized, etc... while another possible threat walks through.

I am not saying we need to be harsh but the logic behind racially profiling Middle Eaterners is the same faulty logic as if a college women were to say "O hey, Latino guys are most likely to rape me, therefore I should only worry about Latino guys raping me at college parties and can walk alone down dark allies as long as no Latino guys are there."

    Johnny the whitey
    Brandon the black
    Zach the Asian
    Brad the Indian

Are all just as likely candidates in my opinion.

    This is bullshit.

What about the rights of every Middle-Eastern individual that are violated by subjecting them to the constant hassle and degradation of "random" searches? Or even worse, as you are suggesting, explicit screening procedures? Are they not innocent too?

No, they must be guilty until they are proven innocent. icon_rolleyes.gif

I suggest that you do some reading on in-group and out-group psychology and sociology; you'll see the detrimental effects that will bite us in the ass in the long run if this attitude keeps up.

Dude, we only have one ass cheek left thanks to how ignorant our society has become. As long as there are those who will continue to normalise prejudice and bigotry, we will not be going anywhere. It's quite absurd that a country as financially well-off as ours (well, we WERE wealthy at one point), our social policies and beliefs are comparable to a fascist nation!

BTW, let me state once again that the burqa issue in France has no relation to racism at all! It's solely an issue of religious liberty vs. government policy. It's like the federal government mandating that Christians be not allowed to wear crucifixes so as not to offend secular society.

Depending on the circumstances and nature of the threat, everyone has the potential to be profiled. It's not so much "racist" as it is convenient.
