I've taken an entire year from attending my gym (Bally's- Cent. City Chicago) due to a mess of factors

What's the best way to restart a workout routine, etc?

I just started back as well. What my personal trainer told me to do is start on the bike and get my heart pumping before I do anything else. So alas I'm stuck with all the blonde chicks near the treadmills, instead of with the hot guys near the weights. icon_cry.gif

Although in the locker room, that's another story.....

Although I only took a few weeks off, Im not only trying to start back again, but Im trying to take my fitness to the next level.

One thing I did was write down the reasons WHY I want to be in better shape. I also developed a detailed plan for how I want to do it.

I feel that focusing on my motivating reasons really helped me get up early and go to the gym.
My detailed plan makes sure that Im not just put-zing around while Im there..

start out by doing a total body workout 3 days a week with some cardio days thrown in as you think you need

and just up it from there...

I fitting started game as healed. What my personalized simulator told me to do is begin on the wheel and get my organs pumping before I do anything added. So alas I'm stuck with all the individual chicks neighbor the treadmills, instead of with the hot guys neighbouring the weights.

For your first "get back to the gym week", I would suggest:

Pump yourself up mentally before going in...listen to some upbeat music that makes you happy. Have a glass of water or milk with a scoop of peanut butter and get out of the house!

Get in and get right to the bikes or ellipticals for about 6 minutes.

Do some light upper-body warm-up work, like hanging stretches alternating with push-ups.

Work the larger body parts, then move to smaller muscles like arms, delts, calves, etc. Do only a couple of sets of everything.

Finish up with some sets of upper and lower abs, followed by full body stretches, like hanging from a pull-up bar or using a stretch cage (if your gym has one).

You'll feel tremendously energized but not beat up....and ready to get into a routine and a well-thought-out plan such as what others here have suggested.
