I was a floor trader in options on the American Stock Exchange years ago--one of those guys you see on TV in blue jackets screaming and waving pieces of paper in the air. I got the job, for which I had no training, because I was part of a (now vanished) late night cards-and-backgammon scene in New York. All of the players eventually went down to Wall Street; same game really, but with more significant stakes. None of us had a clue when we started. That's why all the midnight card clubs are gone...the last of them closed in the late 80s.

    Design and development in graphics/internet

I got the job because I wasn't constrained in my thinking about how things where always done and because I went with my own flow of things. I stood out, was honest, friendly and passionate.

Then I went out on my own after a while and started making 5 times the money, never sleeping, eating horribly, not having any sort of life, looking after 19 other people and there problems and feeling like everything else was more important then the things that where actually important.

So, now, I work when I want too, do the jobs I want, spend as much time doing other things as I want, get paid well to do the things I take off and have as much time as I need to rest and relax.

Now I'm looking for a more meaningful job that will be helpful to others but I have as much time as I want to do it!

Those days are over. To be a manager at McDonalds you have to have at least a high school diploma. Everything is so competitive now that you need to have a degree or a skilled trade (plumber, electrician, etc) to make it. Then again, I know quite a few college graduates that ended up working at the Olive Garden (AFTER they recieved their degree) - granted one is in Law School, however he is not the norm. If you want to make any money, you MUST be skilled at a craft.

Upon careful thinking - there is one area where you may be able to get a job w/ just a hs diploma and actually make decent money - Mortgages. Unfortunately that market is f'ed right now...so you are back to square one.

I hear real estate is fun and it doesn't require much training.
