Has anyone tried swimming with these? How much do they really increase the resistance? If you swim with high intensity is it similar to lifting (lighter) weights and do the muscles get a good workout?

Swimming gloves allow more water to be pulled during each arm stroke, which will increase your aerobic efficiency and build your upper body strength without strain to your shoulder. You will have an easier and faster stroke, which greatly improves your breathing – which builds your endurance. From being able to complete more laps, you (and others) should notices a nice symetrical development in you arms, pecs and back, wity less strain on your lats

I would suggest you get Speedo Power Paddles. They are the strongest paddle I've used. You can get them cheap if you order them from www.swimoutlet.com
