  I'd say it's all about how it's being said. If someone uses a homophobic term to deride the kind of person who would use it seriously, then I'd say it's acceptable.

  I would think that for a gay guy to call another gay guy a "fag" would be a term of brotherhood (sisterhood...?)and friendship. Kinda sorta like when minority persons call other minority persons a certain term It's seemingly OK and meant with with no disrespect, thus it should be the same with us gay men to use the word fag, or gurl, or gurlfriend, or queen ..or like whatever, ya know.

  I read in another thread where someone used it derogatorily to separate gays and fags and it should never be used like that. That person still has a lot of growing up and growing comfy with his homosexuality to do. I pity him and others who think they are better because of whatever.

  I guess I should clarify/be more specific. Henry Rollins in one of his spoken word/stand up routines talks about rumors surrounding his sexuality and uses the opportunity to address how stupid homophobia really is and how only an idiot would walk around thinking "you fucking fag etc". I think in this context, his use of the word is appropriate.

  I got straight mates who call me a Fag, usually something like "Hey Fag" then of course the next second they got there arms around me giving me a hug They don't say it out of malice, they love me and hearing fag coming out of there mouth isn't insulting or hurtful..

  It's language... not only do we have issues of freedom of speech, but also one of the "benefits" that gay guys create when using the term "fag" is that the term then comes to be "owned" (for want of a better word... i just woke up...) by the gay community and therefore when used in a deregatory way is much less offensive.... Sort of like "nigga" (distinguish between "nigger" and "nigga" though).

  I guess that's only if you agree that that's what actually occurring. I, however, have never agreed with the idea of appropriating hateful terminology, either for gays or for blacks. I think that whole idea is a bunch of crap.

  Actually only when joking disparagingly about myself among my gay friends, and then often as the adjective "faggy." But I would never call them a fag, nor queer, or most slang words for gay, except "queen" which most of them deserve, often preceded by "drama" or "big old."
