I leave you to read the Pope's comments for yourself.

The fallacy of his argument ought to be manifest: that offering gay people the right to marry---which is not a right available to gay people in the UK---in fact deprives no-one of freedom.

The pope's motivation is obvious: he hopes to draw conservative adherents from the C of E to the Catholic church.

Somehow I doubt the British will be impressed by much the Pope has to say. Subversive Roman Catholic attempts to overthrow the English monarchy, and later the United Kingdom are not easily forgotten. Here's how Monty Python mocked the Catholics, in The Meaning of LIfe over the issue of birth control (and with a shameless parody of the movie musical Oliver!):

"Pope Benedict XVI has condemned British equality legislation for running contrary to "natural law" as he confirmed his first visit to the UK later this year.

In a letter addressed to the Catholic bishops of England and Wales, the pope praised Britain's "firm commitment to equality of opportunity for all"

Am I missing something, or these two statements contradict one another?

Not in the Pope's fractured logic, if you read the linked article. The Vatican argument is that equality for gays denies Catholics their rights to discriminate, according to their religious beliefs.

It's not discrimination if Catholics deny rights to others, because, after all, God is on their side, and nothing they believe or follow is wrong. But forcing Catholics to acknowledge the rights of others is by definition discrimination.

Heads I win, tales you lose. But don't just blame the Roman Catholics. US fundamentalist Christians follow the same faulty logic. When God is on your side, nothing you do can be wrong, and your opponents must always be wrong, and logic and reason need never enter it.

And for that matter, sounds a lot like some of the Republicans here, who also believe God has blessed their political goals. When God tells you how to vote, the political debate simply stops.

How about vowing to a life of celibacy?! How unnatural is that? Imagine if everyone dedicated their lives in that way, the human race would come to an end! It's just as bad as being gay!

Why he gets paid and paid to cover up for child molesters and condemn most of the world I'll never understand. That said, I think Catholics are sexy. All that gruesome imagery makes a body kinky or something.

Would you say that Catholicism promotes Cannibalism and that Jesus was in fact one of if not THE first zombie?

It makes sense... If you let gay folk have equal rights, they'll just end up having a positive self-image. If they have a positive self-image, they might try to go out and meet someone and fall in love. If they fall in love, who are the priests going to fuck on the sly?

Pope Hitler doesn't know his ass from a hole in the wall about natural law. The man has such a senile, primitive mind and it is made more obvious from making scientifically baseless statements about natural law. When is this aging, Nazi moron going to accept the true fact that homosexuality exists in nature.

I snorted coffee reading that one! You owe me a keyboard -- but don't bother, the wit was worth it!!!

I've got to plagiarize you (or give credit) and post this over on the Prop 8 Trial Tracker site where some fundamentalists often raise the "it's unnatural" insults in their attacks on the same sex marriage debates..... a perfect comeback./ Thanks, MZ!

I can even think of an even better thing when dealing with this primitive minded moron of a Pope, national governments standing up to him and telling him and the rest of the Catholic hierarchy to mind their own damn business.

Gay couples have been able to enter civil partnerships in the UK for about four years now. Elton John and David Furnish were famously amongst the first to do so.

From memory, there was a stink raised by Cathloic-run adoption agencies that did not want to consider applications by gay couple to adopt. Their complaint is that UK legislation prevents them from excluding their application on the basis of sexual orientation. So they are making a 'religious freedom' argument.

Agree the Pope's argument is twisted. What is he on about? Limitations on the freedom of religious people to act hatefully towards gay people?!?

"a lot of Catholics"? How many? What percentage? What are the studies that prove this?

My understanding is that Roman Catholics are required to do the Pope's bidding, whatever he says, under pain of sin, and even excommunication. Is that not true? Please explain if that is not so.

tallhairy saidi think there should be a grassroots movement to spread gay rumors about the pope. for instance - my friend met the pope cruising in the park in full papal attire. the old pope dude asked if my friend wanted to kiss his ring and then lifted up his skirt and spread em.

Well, the current Pope does wear Prada, just like the Devil... icon_rolleyes.gif
