Obama hooks it it this time!

President Obama's top defense officials will tell the Senate today that the military will no longer aggressively pursue disciplinary action against gay service members whose orientation is revealed against their will by third parties, sources say.

In testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs Chairman Michael Mullen also are expected to announce the creation of a group to assess how to carry out a full repeal of the decades-old "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which requires gay soldiers to keep their sexual preferences secret.

Gates and Mullen are also expected to tell senators that it could take years to integrate gays fully into the military.

It's still up to either Congress, which will NEVER approve gays in the military, or the President, who will NEVER approve gays in the military, during his first (and probably only) term.

I'll believe it when it happens.

I will have to say that I was shocked to hear the big cheese of the military, as well as the REPUBLICAN Secretary of Defense, advocating the idea. Well, they do need more warm bodies to fight and die in Afghanistan.

Of course, the whiny, cranky old man from Arizona (McCain) was dead set against the idea. Now, there's your typical Republican !

How is it that they can be so stupid to turn an easy thing into drama? GAYS already are there! THEY already are integrated! just stop kicking them out and making a big deal out of nothing! What do they think gays want .. chocolates on their pillows? icon_rolleyes.gif

I'm not complaining that they are finally doing something, I just don't think they get it.

I'm guessing you did not watch the State of the Union, seeing as that Obama is the one who set this whole ball in motion. The Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff didn't just up and decide, hey lets push for this without the President's approval. Furthermore, a Democratic controlled congress has already showed willingness to support this. Really, when the military itself is saying it is time to repeal a nonsensical act, who can congressional republicans point to as proof of their insistence that gays continue to hide. In fact the Admiral's speech to congress was passionate and sensible, I bet it's sealed by the end of the year. If not the President can issue an executive order, and boom we are done. After all the military was desegregated at the stroke of a pen from Truman.

which requires gay soldiers to keep their sexual preferences secret.

It requires that soldiers not engage in any form of same-sex activity, regardless if it's secret or not..

This not good enough, it's a not step in the right direction, it's just more dragging of feet and non-leadership on the issue.
