Pretty sickening, but if that's how you set up your society, what do you do?

Yeah and the Afghan girls who are blown up because they're going to school and the American kids who are denied medical treatment or blood transfusions because it's not the will of "God"

.... and the gay kids who are shunned beaten and yes in places like Uganda maybe even killed

What one thing is seen in each one of these "Abominations"?

Thank god you live in America, where there isn't systemic racism and homophobia and Matthew Sheppard wasn't murdered for being gay. Given these two facts, I take your opinion on this matter with the utmost respect.

It's very interesting, isn't it, that the Guardian has made a conscious effort to avoid mentioning that --- and rightly so.

Another CLASSIC example of false belief systems at work and their head-fucked followers.

The best belief systems are belief systems that are TRUE.

You miss the part where to them it's and to you it's false. Truth is a point of view concept. You and I have misconceptions of the world, but to us they are the truth.

I see a lot of you critizing someone who said something nasty about rural Islamic culture, but I can't help but wonder how many of you have actually spent time in the middle east?

Girls and women are routinely murdered in rural Islamic Society for such terrible crimes as learning how to read or being raped. This is an acceptable part of the culture. In America, it is not.

Homosexuals are routinely murdered in Islamic Society via government sanctioned implementations of Sharia Law. At last check, this also does not happen in the US.

Women in the vast majority of Islamic Societies are not permitted to talk to men, go outside without a veil or without being entirely covered, are not permitted to drive or hold jobs, divorce without fear of being murdered (which is sanctioned tribally), or convert to any other religion without being summarily executed. I won't even go into using birth control or having sex before marriage, but I feel compelled to point out that women whose hymen is not intact just prior to being married (and yes, it is checked) are also executed.

These things are not acceptable in the United States.

You want to be tolerant of that? Go ahead. I, on the other hand, think that it is long overdue to draw the line. Believe in the invisible friend all you want, but it's time to put these barbaric practices to rest.

And for those of you criticizing the US, I highly recommend you take your selves to live in rural Iran for a spell and just TRY to survive being out of the closet. Or any other predominately Islamic culture. You might actually appreciate what you have after that lovely experience.

I don't think that anyone will tell you that these things aren't despicable, but to sit around calling another culture barbaric and telling them how to act is nothing new, they call it colonialism. If women in the middle east want to be treated differently then they should fight for what they feel is right for them because their idea of liberty isn't wrong because it doesn't fit in exactly with ours. You should also be a bit more careful and turn that critical anthropological eye inward a bit more before you go around casting gross blanket statements about an entire culture. Remember, Women in western society were considered to be property until they got together and fought for what they wanted.

In response to your first question. I recently visited a friend in Saudi Arabia, his mother not only works as do many women in one of the more rigid countries in the middle east, but works for the government (and presumably knows how to read).

Truth can be PROVEN. False can't. That's where you're wrong. No false belief system can be proven. Truth based systems can be. No matter how you try to slant it, that's the facts.

I don't have any misconceptions about electricity being real, or nuclear power, or the fact that The Earth revolves around The Sun. Those are TRUTHS. I positively know that false belief systems are dangerous by a preponderance of evidence of all the damage that they do.

My understanding was that this murder had less to do with Islamic values than the Kurdish tradition of honor killings. The practice is certainly not a pan-Islamic viewpoint.

A really basic internet search shows honor killings are certainly not restricted to the Middle East or South Asia: until recently, it was legal in Colombia and Brazil for wives to be slain for adultery.

I never said poor rural Muslims are any less retarded than poor rural Christians. Do you want me to make a list of EVERY kind of poor rural retard there is out there so that you don't go off on a diversity tangent? These people are poor rural Muslim retards. That is a fact. Don't deviate from the thread. Reminding me (for the god damn milionth time) about Sheppard's murder does not justify nor rationalize this Turkish girl buried alive story one bit. Now stop changing the story about feeling sorry for fags and feel sorry for this girl, damn.

Please elaborate on instances where Jews and Christians kill their own family members for religious purposes. And don't say circumcision or use historical references as evidence. If there are any, I bet you your unborn children that it's not nearly as common or acceptable as it is in poor rural Muslim areas.

The parents didn't love her to begin with, if they did they wouldn't of done that.

Ironically, the prophet Mohammed fought and forbade (not physically) the pre-Islamic (also know in Arabic as the "dyahiliya times" = the ignorant times) act of burying women/girls alive. It is not their Muslim identity that made them do such thing, rather their deep rooted traditional customs. It is important to make that distinction, because tradition is not religion... generally tradition overpowers religion. Aside from that, these crimes happen in urban rich non-Muslim areas as well.

I find it sad that people use horrible events like these to propagate their (mistaken) believes.

But you do have misconceptions about how human beings interact, or how to relate to your parents. To me, your view is false. If people believe something, then in their mind it is true and no amount of name calling, or even politely telling them they are wrong will change that.

outside all this debate of principles and concepts, i can't help trying to imagine the agony and horror of the poor girl.
