In Miami Beach a Man named Harold Strickland witnessed two Police Officers beat a man allegedly for kissing another man
Mr Strickland called 911 to report that the officers were needlessly beating the man
When the police got wind that Mr Strickland was making the call they arrested him

This area of Miami Beach has had a long history of Police abuse
and until now it's been hearsay

“The officers then told Strickland: ‘We know what you're doing here. We're sick of all the f---ing fags in the neighborhood.' The officers pushed Strickland to the ground and tied his hands behind his back,'' Rosenwald wrote in an ACLU letter delivered Wednesday to Miami Beach Mayor Matti Herrera Bower.

“While Strickland was on the ground, the officers continued to spew anti-gay epithets. They called him a ‘f---ing fag' and told him he was going to ‘get it good in jail.'''

    Here's the call

Well, here's potentially another regarding the police here. Yesterday, Saturday, 2 friends of ours visiting from Holland were at Sebastian Beach in Fort Lauderdale, which is the main "gay" beach in town, nearest to over 2 dozen gay guesthouses. They told us a group of anti-gay protestors were spread out down the sidewalk next to the sand, clustered around the several entrances to the beach in the low concrete wall that runs alongside it (a picture of me standing on that wall is below).

And they had bullhorns, and were shouting anti-gay messages, and condemning gays for our immoral and sinful activities, making a disturbance that drove some beachgoers away. Now my understanding is that using any kind of PA system like a bullhorn is illegal, without a permit for a public gathering, and their actions should have constituted disturbing the peace.

Yet our friends said there were many police around, as they usually are along that stretch of beach, and they did not interfere, despite complaints by other people. Now I want to look into this, and learn what was going on, and if this story is true. I know the Mayor of Broward County, a gay man, where this happened, so I'm sure I'll eventually find out.

I'd like to know if a permit was granted for this activity, and if so, why. And if no permit was granted, but should have been required, why the police did not put a stop to it, despite complaints. I'd also like to know who this group was. So far I've seen no local news stories about it.

Well it wasn't two gay guys but in England, two MMA fighters were cross dressing, they don't normally do it probably for a party or something, so a group of guys came up and started harrassing them with anti-gay slurs and then tried beating them up. Well unfortnately for them the guys were very good mma fighters and ended up kicking the shit out of the guys instead. My friend whose from the UK told me so I think I got the details right.

    wow..horrible stuff.

Well here's a humorous look at what happens when some thugs take on a gaggle of gays. (they weren't really gay but dressed the part to blend in)

It's in French, but easy to figure out what's going on anyway for those that don't speak the language. The action starts at about 4:20 into the vid, lol!

I think that's being a bit melodramatic. If that's the case, ALL people live under that threat because physical and emotional abuse is not isolated to just gays. This is an exception, not the norm. Unfortunately, the fact that bad cops exist is a sad reality. That said, what happened to this guy at the hands of this bad-cop is outrageous and I hope he is severely punished, and fired, and that this crime is handled appropriately.

Listening to the 911 call was absolutely chilling. It is so maddening that cops like this are allowed to run loose. I would love to know what happened to the young guy "anonymous caller" who they then turned on.

@Red Vespa-please keep us posted. I'd really like to hear from people that work along that stretch of the beach. There are tons of outdoor cafes, etc. that should have wanted to do something about the noise and commotion created by the potesters. If they had complained the police should have been obligated to act. Now-I have no problem with them protesting; but it should not be in violation of the law or done in such a way that is harassing in nature. Blocking the entrance to the beach is harassing those that wish to use those entrances.

I will. I already saw a GLBT community liaison for the Broward County Sheriff's Office today, and learned that stretch of beach is policed exclusively by the FLPD, and so BSO had no involvement with Saturday's incident, but had already heard some rumors about it. I was given the name of the GLBT liaison for the FLPD, and will contact that person tomorrow to see what I can learn. And these 2 officers regularly coordinate together, so I know they'll be in contact with each other over it, as well.

Funny coincidence, though: I had left voicemail for the BSO rep around noon Sunday, and at 3 I was at a shopping mall with my partner, and got a tap on my shoulder. I turned around, and there was the rep in person! But just saying a friendly hello, hadn't heard my message yet, so I said please check voicemail and get back to me when convenient. I didn't want to discuss that kind of official business in a busy mall, and indeed I got my call-back a few hours later. So hopefully I'll know something more about it by tomorrow.

If this is going to be happening there's going to be me sitting on that beach this coming Saturday!!!!

This is just the kind of thing that pisses me off
I hope the GLCC has contacted Jack Seilor's Office
There is no way the BSO should have allowed this to happen

I was a cop in my hometown for 19 years, I know, I dnt look my age guys icon_smile.gif

Newayz, I was married and didn't "come out" until I had been on the force about 18 years. All the other officer's FREAKED OUT! Most of them talked all kinda shit behind my back, but luckily for me I was a 250 pound bodybuilder and none of the other cops were close to my size, at least not with muscle, so they were scared of sayin anything in my face!!!

The police chief referred to gays as "fags" to me BEFORE he knew I was gay, so I knew what his position would be! When I "came out" I was a Sergeant, had run for Sheriff a couple years before and did really well and was almost appointed Chief of Police myself just a year before I "came out". When I "came out" the Chief launched a bullshit IA on me, basically the I guess u could call the allegations "mutany". I was found quilty and demoted. Transferred back to the patrol division as a just a patrolman! I still has considered a senior officer, so had my pick of shifts to go to. When I chose, it got back to me that the other officer's on the shift I chose had said at a shift change that if I came to their shift they weren't gonna back me up! I went to the next shift change, and in front of the two squads told the officers that said it that I had heard what they said and that if a situation was bad enough that I needed back up that there was no need for any of them to show up anyway. I said "if somethin is bad enough that I need back-up, none of you pussies could do anything to help anyway"!

I had hurt my back and within a year of being assigned back to patrol had to have back surgery. Before I even had time to try to recover the chief used it as an excuse to "medically retire me", so I know how bullshit some cops can be toward the GLBT Community, even when it turns out being one of their own!

THE OFFICERS INVOLVED IN THIS NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE, BUT I'M AFRAID WE ARE A LONG WAY FROM HAVING EQUAL RIGHTS, EVEN EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER THE LAW! It's sad indeed, but true.

Sorry for goin on a tangent, what I wrote doesn't even make sense, but it helps me emotionally to vent about what happened to me from time to time.

BTW, The city has to pay me a pretty good chunk of the salary I was making (as a sergeant) every month for the rest of my life now! So, I did get some justice!

This latest violent mistreatment of gay men by two ignorant, brutal cops shows that Miami Beach is not quite as gay tolerant as it is percieved to be. Hopefully these two cops will be thrown off the force and the rest of the police department is giving additional sensitivity training. After all, police officers are public servants paid with our hard earned tax dollars.

They will walk... what do you think will happen to them? Miami and Miami Beach are becoming totally gay-hostile, and I would advise against any gays coming down there, except for brief day trips, preferably with companions. Trust me, I live here -- gays are hated in Miami.
