Meg Whitman Running For Governor of California

I could not support someone that supported Prop 8.

She plans on putting $100 million of her own money into the campaign. Her commercials are constantly running. Looks like it is going to be a tough to beat her. icon_sad.gif

    Quote:
was President and Chief Executive Officer of eBay from March 1998 to March 2008

    Quote:

On September 22, 2009, Whitman announced she would run for governor of California in the 2010 election.[29] Her candidacy has been endorsed by John McCain and Mitt Romney. If elected, she would become the first female governor of California.

The Public Policy Institute of California most recent poll has her leading all Republicans with 32%.[30]

Whitman (explaining that it is best to start only a few things and finish them, instead of starting a lot of things and not finishing them) has committed to only three major areas in her campaign: job creation, reduced state government spending, and reform of the state's K-12 educational system. [31]
Whitman has pledged to not raise taxes and signed the Americans for Tax Reform's "No New Taxes Pledge" on the day she announced her candidacy for governor. She also proposes lowering business taxes and making California a more business-friendly environment, stating that California is losing jobs not to other countries but to neighboring states with lower tax rates - Nevada, Arizona, and Oregon.[32] For water issues, Whitman is asking for the convention of a "God Squad" which would be able to over rule a federal judge and turn on water for thousands of Central Valley farmers.[33] She said if elected, on her first day[34] she would suspend certain provisions of AB 32, a global warming bill, for one year so that its economic consequences are understood.[35]
Whitman's voting record was called to task by The Sacramento Bee who say Whitman voted infrequently according to her voting records for California.[36][37] Records uncovered by conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt countered the claims of the Sacramento Bee and resulted in the infamous interview with editor Amy Chance.[38] Whitman has described her voting record was "atrocious," apologized,[37] and states that she is happy to discuss the matter.[39]

Whitman supported California's Proposition 8 in 2008, which reversed the In re Marriage Cases of 2008 which granted homosexual couples the right to marry in California, but she said that the same-sex marriages that took place before the ban should be recognized and that gay and lesbian couples should be able to adopt children.[40] Whitman is a supporter of civil unions.[40] Whitman voted in favor of California Proposition 4, an initiative that requires minors to notify their parents if they receive an abortion, except in certain cases.[41]

Whitman's campaign is largely self-funded. As of February 2010, the billionaire has put $39 million of her own money into the race. Figures for 2009 show that 20% of her contributions, about $2.2 million, came from out-of-state contributors. The biggest donations came from New York investment bankers, hedge fund managers, attorneys and others who collectively gave Whitman more than $400,000, according to an Associated Press review of campaign reports.[42]

There are bigger issues then just gay marriage. Yes of course I want to see it pass and its bullshit that she is against it, but she obviously knows how to make money and run a business and get shit together. I think getting the economy of California and education systems back on track (like she claims and so do so many other politicians but at least she seems to have proof and has made herself a billionaire) are more important right now then gay marriage.

30% of the classes at my college are about to get cut, 30%! It is going to be even harder to get the classes I need for my major. There were 20,000 people on a wait list for classes these past 2 semesters. California keeps losing money and its hurting everyone. How about we put someone in there who can fix it and when times get better push for gay marriage.

I like what Whitman has to say and her huge support for education. If have my choice I would take a leader who really supports education over a leader who is opposed to Prop 8.

And what kind of education does prop 8 provide?

Today's prop 8 is yesterdays prop 6 under which you could not have a job as a teacher.

Remember, Schwarzenegger was lauded as a good candidate because of his business success. But too much of the budget is out of the governor's control. Whitman won't have any better chance of success at fixing the economy unless two things change: the initiative process and the 2/3 requirement to pass a budget. Those have screwed us badly.

So you are saying that you think that someone who can blow lots of money on advertising her campaign, and grow an internet business during a growing economy and internet boom can do better as governor than someone that has previous experience as governor of California and therefore experience working with the state legislature.

Read everything you can about this man and what he did to California before you consider him for governor again. California suffered big time when Brown and his father were governors. Meg Whitman isn't perfect with gay rights, but read up - read every good source you can find (if you are a Californian and care) and keep this man out of office.

Two terms of his incompetency are two terms too many!

Better to get marriage equality in place as it stands a greater chance of happening than California making an economic comeback.

California suffered big time when Brown and his father were governors.

Certainly one can make a case that Jerry Brown's last governoship was not that impressive -- mainly notable for the passage of prop 13 in 1978.

But Pat Brown's terms as governor are generally considered quite successful, and certainly a lot was accomplished in the State during that time. Much of the current infrastructure/highway system was built during that time, and the also the "California Master Plan for Higher Education" was adopted during his terms. It's hard to see that California 'suffered' during Pat Brown's terms as governor.

As for today, I find neither Jerry Brown nor Meg Whitmen particularly inspiring.

The fact that someone can support half-ass'ed human equality and think it's 'ok' says a lot about the person. I actually think that is more dangerous than someone who is crazy anti-gay like the Phelps clan.
