just bought this book by Christian Lander- i've been cracking up over its brief, witty, and eerily accurate chapters for days now. if you've read this book, discuss it here. if not- you should- i swear you'll crack up.

    some topics include:

being 'authentic', religions their parents don't belong to, film festivals, farmers markets, organic food, diversity, nonprofit organizations, having black friends, yoga, hating their parents, awareness, international travel/study abroad, microbreweries, obscure wine, 80s night, marathons, being outdoors, not having a tv, wrigley field, snowboarding, veganism/vegetarianism, pot, architecture, renovations, apple products, indie music, sushi, public radio, liberal arts degrees, vintage, irony, living by the water, prius, knowing what's best for poor people, expensive sandwiches, recycling, standing still at concerts, divorce, gentrification, bottled water, modern furniture, the 'idea' of soccer, hating corporations, tshirts, outdoor performance clothes, st. patrick's day, dinner parties, music piracy, newbalance shoes, facial hair.

-to name a few lol. i'm just halfway thorough the book.
actually, this may resonate a lot more with college kids than the older generations.
this bit was from the two pages on facial hair:

"...it was during this time that don johnson perfected the stubble look, which is like a regular beard but cut short in such a way as to look like you haven't shaved for a few days- it was a success with white people since it was yet another case of having to do a lot of work to look like you didn't do any. at some point during the early part of the twenty first century, white people discovered that the combination of a beard and thick-framed glasses was a solid white look that showed individuality, musical taste, and a rich educational pedigree. bearded white males have had much social success in recent years, as their facial hair says, "look at me. i am manly enough to grow this beard, yet i wear glasses, which shows my intellectual and sensitive side. i wear plaid, which shows i'm down with the people, but i also have expensive designer jeans, which shows that i have taste. i am the perfect male with whom to engage in a one-to-two-year relationship that might include living together. allow me to buy you a pabst."
they are pretty much unstoppable. in fact, the only white person who can top a bearded male is a white person who has grown ironic facial hair. these are the elite. they grow mustaches in various guises to show that they are so out of style that they are actually cooler than you."

note, do not take anything in it seriously. (duh)

Looks like I have another book to add to the pile of "to reads" that I've got stacking up. I need a good laugh; I think I'll add it to the top of the pile. I need something to pick me up after I finish book 7 of Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Great stories but very dark, as expected.

Love Stephen King! I finished that series of books last year. It was kind of sad to come to the end of it.icon_cry.gif

As for this thread, that's some funny shit! It's like the site, black people love us. If you haven't seen it, check it out! Sometimes we have to be able to just laugh at ourselves, and each other. www.blackpeopleloveus.com

That section on the beard stubble and the glasses made me laugh!icon_lol.gif

Thanks for this. I just visited San Francisco a few times last year. The section on it was spot on and the comments section just blew me away. I particularly love the people who consider themselves intelligent, even though their comments would lead you to believe otherwise. icon_cool.gif
