I saw that there was protest and opposition to the Games being in Vancouver....this is from Wikipedia.....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Winter_Olympics

    Opposition

Opposition to holding the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver has been expressed by hundreds of activists and politicians, including Lower Mainland Mayors Derek Corrigan and Richard Walton. Many of the public Olympic events held to date in Vancouver have been attended by protesters. Environmental protests at Eagleridge Bluffs in West Vancouver resulted in the arrest of over 20 people, and jail time for two local women, Betty Krawczyk and Harriet Nahanee.
Protesters have also vandalized branches of the Royal Bank of Canada, an Olympic sponsor, in Ottawa, Vancouver and Victoria.
There are several reasons for the opposition, some of which are outlined in the documentary film Five Ring Circus and in Helen Jefferson Lenskyj's books Olympic Industry Resistance (2007) and Inside the Olympic Industry (2000). These issues include:

The large expense to taxpayers, estimated in 2007 to be CAN$580 million. After the stock market crash of 2008, there are increasing concerns that Games-related projects will not meet their economic targets. The Olympic Village development, for example, was originally intended to make a profit, but one critic estimates it will be millions in debt. Olympic organizers have not commented on this estimate.

The destruction of the natural environment, particularly at Eagleridge Bluffs to build a new highway. According to critics, despite claims of the “greenest Olympics” ever, and statements about "sustainability", the 2010 Olympics will be among the "most environmentally destructive" in history.

Exploitation of women with the increase of human trafficking for the purpose of forced prostitution.

There is opposition to the Olympics amongst indigenous people and their supporters. Although the Lil'wat branch of the St'at'imc Nation is a co-host of the games, a splinter group from the Seton band known as the St’at’imc of Sutikalh, who have also opposed the Cayoosh Ski Resort, fear the Olympics will once again bring unwanted tourism and real estate sales to their territory. On another front, local aboriginal people as well as Canadian Inuit expressed concern over the choice of an inukshuk as the symbol of the Games, with some Inuit leaders such as former Nunavut Commissioner Peter Irniq stating that the inukshuk is a culturally important symbol to them. He said that the "Inuit never build inuksuit with head, legs and arms. I have seen inuksuit build [sic] more recently, 100 years maybe by non-Inuit in Nunavut, with head, legs and arms. These are not called inuksuit. These are called inunguat, imitation of man." Local aboriginal groups also expressed annoyance that the design did not reflect the Coast Salish and Interior Salish native culture from the region the Games are being held in, but rather that of the Inuit, who are indigenous to the Arctic far from Vancouver. One chief, Stewart Phillip, President of the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs, also said that the design lacked dignity, comparing it to Pac-Man. Edward John, Grand Chief of the First Nations Summit, said some native leaders were so upset about the issue they were prepared to walk out of the unveiling ceremony. The aboriginal governments of the Squamish, Musqueam, Lil'wat and Tsleil-Waututh (the "Four Host First Nations"), on whose traditional territory the games will be held, signed a protocol in 2004 in support of the games.

I'm sure there is some group out there opposed to the Sun rising in the morning too. Who cares. The Olympics is one of the coolest international traditions ever.

For the same reason I don't indulge in ice cream every day, it loses it's value when you have it much more often.

It's called opportunity cost... what COULD that money have been spent on.

I'm all for togetherness and celebrating and sports competitions, but at some point the gaudiness and expenses overtakes what brief celebrating there is. As well, Montreal only recently paid off their 1976 Olympics. The costs are not transparent so the taxpayer only finds out AFTER they're charged by VANOC.

As far as the women thing goes, there are brothels in Vancouver that are being beefed up because of the extra business... if people don't go to brothels where there is some modicum of welfare, than they go to others who ain't so kind to their wiminz.

For one reason, the Olympics are steeped in tradition through history. It takes a city years to prepare to be on the world stage and host the Olympics (not to mention the enormous expense to mount the games). More importantly, it takes years for the world-class athletes to prepare to bring it to the level of Olympic status. Every four years, I think, is perfect. It makes The Olympics THE sporting event for all the world.

    i am anti-olympic.

you have no idea the amount of road closures and inconvenience that the olympics has brought us. a 15 minute drive to work, now takes 1 hour because of multiple detours. i can't even park in front of my building because it has been dedicated as a "olympic vehicle lane"

and with all these special venues and construction who pays for it? we do, through my property taxes. icon_evil.gif

Also, it's such a massive undertaking it could probably be only done once a year. My sports background is wrestling -- one of the sports nobody at ESPN cares about. One of the great things about the Olympics is those sports are totally on display for a couple of weeks and on the biggest sports stage in the world. Keep in mind that most of the athletes are indeed amateurs, that they have families and lives and train to be the best without earning millions of dollars.

its a once every 4 years moment to gather the best athletes in this planet to play and compete for their countries. There is an investment, an investment to bring the world together.

Would you guys like some facts?

The cost is not 580 million, more like 2 billion.

    Here:

    http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/story.html?id=01fc5dbe-9e38-4573-9b07-696fd3144d3f

The gov't here has been gouging hospital budgets and school budgets to collect money. This spring they announced a 350 some-odd million dollar shortage in medical services plan money. Surprise surprise. They also are going to introduce a harmonized sales tax of 13 percent in July. (They were elected last May with the promise they wouldn't)

We'd love to protest, but won't because we need it to succeed, so the bills at the end will (hopefully) be smaller.

Bill is at ground zero with this stuff and can tell you about the corruption and pocket lining that's going on. Here's an obvious one - the Premier and his cronies are all developers. icon_wink.gif

This is what gives the Olympics a bad name, and quite frankly we feel any city, state or country caught pulling crap on its citizens should be penalized by being shut out of the bidding process for a good 20 years.

I'm just pleased it's not held down here in Oz, because people use such advents to get to the Island Oz, then refuse to go back home, claiming refugee status, yet they could afford to get here. the real refugees could not. So the games become political.

I'm also happy the Winter games will never also be held in Oz, because that what makes us the worlds most livable country, as we never get so cold.

But I hope the Aussies and Australians competing do well anyhow. Will we see an Ice Skating couple out do or match Torvill and Deans performance what 26 years ago, with Bolero? Nothing like it has been done or seen since, and a perfect score they got too.

all the opposed to it are stupid...
the reason the olympics were held in the first place was to promote peace to all the greek city-states and its been going on for years to promote peace to show that were all not so different... and to show that we can have peaceful events while being around such different people...

So you don't think Thredbo or Mt Buller could host the Olympics? How ill-informed...
