RESIZED TEXT GOES HERERESIZED TEXT GOES HERESenator McCain is pushing a bill to give the FDA more control over the supplement industry; which means, if passed, you will not be able to just walk into a supplement store of any kind and make random purchases; this bill would allow the FDA to pull whatever products off the shelves at any given time and may also require a prescription before it can be purchased. This would give the FDA the authority to have a compiled list of supplements they want on the market and banned all others; lets face it, the FDA is in bed with the drug companies so if you think they are looking out for your best interest, think again. Senator McCain claims that this bill would help to control the illegal steriod industry that he strongly opposes, this is bullsh...., how can a bill directed towards supplements control something that is already banned (steriods), this bill will effect everyone and if you are at all interested in how you purchase your supplements I urge you to contact your senators and asked them to oppose this bill from gaining any traction, below is a link that will give more information on the subject, however you can google it as well to learn more.

except there are products out there that cause severe problems that squeak through the FDA. Just last year Hydroxycut was pulled off the shelves for liver failure.

Educate yourselves before you go thinking that this is yet another case of big government trying to take away more of our rights.

I'm no McCain fan, but I'm all for this. The manufacturers of these supplements are no better than alcohol and tobacco co's. Far too many supplements out there cause more harm than good, especially when taken with prescription drugs.

The "supplements" cost nearly nothing to make, and, like drugs, have HUGE profits. Many don't work, and they're NOT subject to FDA approval.

Big Pharm in this country wants to control stuff that does work, and make extreme profits. They WANT the "supplement" industry control.

E.g.: you can take potassium from a store, but, you can't get enough of it to really do any good. A lot of the stuff is just junk.

Another problem with the "supplement" industry is that they play on folks wanting to take T3/T4, or AAS, and they make false claims, OR, they put designer synthetic hormones into the "supplements". If you want the results of AAS, you need to take AAS. That's just how it is. There are no "natural" supplements that do the same thing.

While protein, weight gainer, and vitamins might be o.k., there's a lot of just plain junk in these stores.

I personally don't know that it should be regulated, but, they've been so dishonest about so many things, the writing was on the wall.

Big Pharm would have another venue to exploit folks, as they do in this country for stuff like insulin, HIV drugs, and so on. Having the supplement folks out of the way would help their agenda.

I'm for freedom. Shut down the FDA entirely, BUT make any drug or supplement company provide independent studies of the efficacy of their products before purchase.

Also, the FTC has completely forsaken enforcement of truth in advertising laws. Whatever happened to selling a good product truthfully. And knowingly false political advertisements are the norm.

I don't see this as a "small government" versus "big intrusive government". I see it as a case between truthful references for self-education and personal responsibility.

Get the government out of my life and let me decide what to use in or on my body.

More proof why the FDA should be shuttered permanently. Replaced with independent studies, personal responsibility and enforced truth-in-advertising.

    FROM AP/CNN Feb. 20, 2010:
The diabetes drug Avandia is linked with tens of thousands of heart attacks, and drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline knew of the risks for years but worked to keep them from the public, a Senate committee report released Saturday says.

The 334-page report by the Senate Finance Committee also criticized the Food and Drug Administration, saying that the federal agency that regulates food, tobacco and medications overlooked or overrode safety concerns found by its staff.

Those companies have spent years convincing the FDA to stop generic drug companies from being able to produce generic versions of insulin. In a capitalist country, these huge corporations use the government to prevent competition and keep drug costs high for diabetics. There are so many diabetics in this country that health care costs could be significantly reduced if insulin was much cheaper. The relationship between private sector and the FDA is a little too cozy.

I agree with the this bill generally.

I think you either want health products regulated or you dont. There was a bill passed quite a while ago now (the name escapes me) that put "supplements" (and almost anything that does not put specific claims on the label) in a magical category on their own away from FDA approval.

This was an enormous blessing to every quack, pseudoscientist, "alternative medicine" proponent, and snake oil salesman to put whatever they wanted to on the shelves (or websites) without needing to do any clinical trials to prove efficacy. Drug companies are of course taking advantage of this too - why spend a decade and millions of dollars doing the proper science when you can just put some meaningless claim like "boost the immune system" on the label and have it ready to be sold in a week.

Yet no one has ever died from taking supplements, The "National food and Poison control Center" just released their "2008" report on supplments and indicated NO reports of any Deaths related to vitamins, minerals or herbs for 2008, 2009 hasn't been compiled yet but I expect it to be a the same as 2008, I wonder how many deaths are on file with regards to staton drugs (to date), maybe Senator McCain might do better focusing on that, oh, I forgot, he probably is in bed with the drug companies, should the drug companies be successful in lockdown of the supplement industry, it will force more people to become co-dependent on statons, their are many supplements that are backed by science and research, u just have to do your homework.

What are you talking about? There are plenty of documented cases of adverse reactions between pharma drugs and supplements. Death? Sure there are, but who's talking about death here? Do supplements (or any drug for that matter) need to lead to death before you feel they're not safe?

Under this new proposal, supplement makers would be required to register with Health and Human Services and submit to the FDA all adverse events received by supplement manufacturers. What's wrong with that?

I did a quick search on the subject and hundreds of citations popped up. Here are the first two:

This sorta makes me laugh. And who do ya think is gonna provide funding for these "studies"? It's just funny to me how many people think things are so simple and a hop skip. When they really aren't.

Oh. And yeah..maybe they should say "Up yours" to the families of those who became fatally ill and died from a tainted tryptophan batch. God...government regulations?...seriously..who needs those...things.

yea. yea. down with the goverment. let freedom ring. yeah. let's light a pipe and smoke it too and do woodstock all over again. down with the system.

    Idiocy.... Pure idiocy.

Just eat a healthy diet and you wont need these supplements.

One has to be careful with supplements. More of a good thing isnt necessarily a better thing. Vitamins and minerals, for example, have to be in balance or they can actually interfere with each other and negate the good that one was taking them for in the first place.

Eat the spectrum in fruits and veggies. Juice if you want a greater intake. You wont OD on fruits and veggies. Plus you get lots more phytonutrients that arent in a specific pill.

... yet tobacco remains. Unbelievable. People need to learn to read warning labels. That's the real issue here.

I'm sure that I will hear a lot more about this next week at the Natural Products Expo in Anaheim. There is always a huge supplement section.

The bill proposed consist of 290 pages outlining how the FDA will control the supplements that are sold to consumers, are you willing to go and pay a doctor to write you a prescription for vitamin c or CoQ10? because that is pretty much what is going to happen if the bill is pushed through, your not familiar with the contents of whats in the bill otherwise I think your opinion would differ, just because few has had a bad reaction to something doesn't mean it needs to be controlled less many are experiencing similar, their are people whom have negative reaction to soy products, does that mean all products containing soy should be pulled from shelves? or if someone is stupid enough to mix alcohol with a high energy caffeine drink and gets a bad reaction all energy drinks should now be pulled? people should have the right to choose, more and more of your right to choose is being taken away right b4 your eyes.

Many supplement are backed by unbiased research and science, having a full spectrum of fruits and veggies is good but research shows because of the soil that is used and how much of the fruits and veggies are hybrid grown, they have far less nutrition than years back, example: chemical indol 3 carbonal which use to be found in abundance within your crucifious veggies such as broccoli and culiflower has been depleted a great deal, research has found that this chemical can inhibit and block the aromatase of many cancer cells that could otherwise mutate; Phizer chemicals is trying to come up with a snthetic version of the chemical, The average american would have to eat between 12-16 bushels of broccoli daily to get the preventative benefits of this chemical.
