Such nonsense is spoken about "liberalism" on RJ that it set me trying to move towards a definition of what liberalism actually is (this stuff is not my academic area... ha)

    Here are three starters:

A Secular Society. The liberal state gives no privilege to any religion, denomination or its followers by virtue of their religion which is denied to those who do not follow it. This freedom of religion also implies freedom from religion. It is the opposite of a theocracy.

A Free and Tolerant Society. Individuals may live as they wish (including by following any religion they wish to) as long as their actions do not negatively effect others. Society must be tolerant of minorities, not seeking to impose the ideology of the majority onto the minority. It is the opposite of excessive government control or mob rule.

An Equal Society. No member of society is intrinsically more important than any other on the basis of gender, race or any accident of birth. As an implication there should be equal opportunities for all in education and health care, equal marriage between consenting adults (e.g. no interracial marriage in the USA pre 1967) and no privileges granted to one part of society which are denied to others. It is the opposite of a feudal society

A liberal state would also require a free and independent press to act as a watchdog or a conscience keeper of social interests. Interesting post!

Canada is the free and tolerant society version. Gay marriage is legal, smoking pot is legal (possessing it isn't, something that smoking-the-pot-you-have-to-get-rid-of-it-because-it's-illegal opponent conservatives are pissed about but then they don't like abortion either) and abortion is paid for by the public health care system that pays for most other medical issues you have.Oh yeah, we save the stem cells too, so you can grow you a new liver when you burn out the old one. Sounds much better than Sarah Palin's version of a free society, no?

The Netherlands is a Liberal Society.
True freedom within a civilized society. At least we still have freedom of speech here in the US.

The US is a pretty free country but most certainly is NOT the freest country in the world. Many laws on the books and enforcement tactics keep us from reaching that ideal.

Somalia would be a Libertarian society, lol.

A liberal society is not jingoistic.

A liberal society is not afraid of outsiders.

A liberal society is truly diverse and integrated.

A liberal society doesn't let fear control them.

    A liberal society is peace.
