Last night,m I noticed what seemed to be an ingrown hair on my ankle. So I popped it with a clean needle and put some peroxide on it. Now my whole ankle is swollen and looks like a spider bit me. Any ideas what it is?

yes, to all of them. It feels kind of like a sprain, but I didn't sprain it.

    Uh, go to a doctor?

Sounds like an infection. You might try soaking it in a solution of Epsom salt, and taking some ibuprofen to reduce inflammation, but a physician could best advise you on how to handle it.

Are you sure it was an ingrown hair and not some sort of bug (a la a tick) burrowed in your skin? Ticks are removed by touching their ass with a hot match head....to get them to remove their mouthparts and heads from the skin. Otherwise, breaking off the body and leaving the head in the skin can cause a serious infection by the bacteria from the critters

Does it feel like a really serious problem? Then go to the ER. Definitely do so if you see any red streaks emanating from the site. And dont fuck around, blood poisoning happens fast.....esp if it was a bug.

Otherwise, aspirin or antihistamine might take the swelling down.

Just leave it alone. The spider eggs will hatch in a couple of weeks. And your ankle will start heal afterward. icon_lol.gif

That sounds very odd. I would go see a doctor if the swelling doesn't go down in 24 hours or so.

Also, for future reference, don't put peroxide on wounds. Yes, it does kill bacteria but it also kills your tissues and actually makes you more susceptible to infection and scarring.

EDIT: and by 24 hours I mean from the start of symptoms, which means tonight.

I'm not a doctor, just a hyperactive Jew, but this *might* be a staff infection.

Really? I never knew that. What would you put on a wound to kill bacteria without damaging tissue?

I'm so sorry. I wish there was any other way, but we have to amputate your entire lower leg.

Seriously though, sounds infected. Consult your doctor before amputation.

Well, I should have said that it's "thought to" to do as it is still a topic of debate - but many people suggest simply using dilute soapy water to clean the wound itself and then for controlling microbial growth using something non-irritating like Neosporin, Bacitracin, etc.

Here's an interesting and short (though somewhat incomplete) NYT article:

I went to CVS and got antihistamine in case it was a spider, antibiotic ointment in case it's an infection and an ice cream cone because if I die, I want to be eating ice cream when it happens.

If it's just Folliculitis as you say, then put some Neosporin on it and keep it covered with a clean bandaid and maybe ice for a few minutes. Keep check on it and change bandaid often. If it the site continues to discharge pus after a day or 2, you may want to get it checked out by an Urgent Care Provider. Only go to ER if it start to turn bluish or inflammation gets worst or if you develop a fever, nausea and/or vomitting, headache and so on. Did you discharge the ingrown hair at the root? Otherwise, if you broke it off, chances are that's what why you are having the problem you are having. Call your HMO or Provider and ask for advice ASAPicon_smile.gif

Keep an eye on it. Since you popped it with a needle even though you say it was clean this provided an entry point for normal skin flora, like staph and strep. These bacteria can cause an infection called cellulitis, which needs to be treated with antibiotics if it spreads to deeper layers of your skin. If the redness increases in color and pain, spreads, and you develop a fever I would contact your physician. It probably won't develop into cellulitis since you aren't obese and I'm guessing not a type 2 diabetic or have any peripheral vascular disease. Just watch it closely.

sticky from the ice cream that is.

yeah, i'd go to a doctor. sounds kind of like an infection of some sort, especially if it's swelling. you may need some antibiotics of some sort.

If you're not going to the doctor, at least put some ice on it to reduce the swelling. A bag of frozen peas works great. (unopened. LOL.)
