Something I saw on a rival website:

    http://outsports.com/jocktalkblog/2010/02/11/basketball-player-apologizes-for-anti-gay-slurs/

I kinda remember the name Drew Schifino from West Virginia. Granted, he was never a major national name, but I'm really worn out from seeing what I see here: Guy uses homophobic slurs as a defense mechanism, then gives a half apology that really doesn't say anything (and what's with his "racial slur" angle? It's all a bit puzzling).

RJ > OS by a large amount.

And yes, it is annoying that people make such claims.

It is a shame - I used to read OutSports a whole lot, but the content hasn't been as good the last year or so.

My take on it is that it was a lot like locker room talk. Do we have to be so sensitive when jocks talk down on each other and use gay slurs as a put down? I think he is ignorant on the slurs and name calling, but it's kind of like what goes on in the RJ threads already. There was a lot of provocation that escalated the rants. It is what it is.

why is someone bringing this up to Outsports, just because the guy played D1 ball does not make him any different than any other average joe that writes on the message boards, facebooks or blogs. He isnt a household name. Dont you think that there are thousands of posts like his all over the place on the internet, why should he be singled out anymore than any other person.

To me he probably is ignorant and homophobic, but I think his use of Tony Homo was the typical lockerroom macho bravado putting Romo down by using a gay remark which youth use alot as sometimes they use the term "gay" to describe something as being stupid and sucking. I know its not a good reinforcement but I think this is much ado about nothing and why is he being called out if thousands of others arent.

I thought so. Fact is people need to be called out on this stuff. You're homophobic? You deserve to be exposed.

I do ponder: how many people that are upset by this, have no issues with straight slurs?
