False belief systems, be they "religion", cults, or other nonsense, are bad, period. When your judgments are based upon an untruth, they cannot be fully qualified.
What's even worse is the intolerance, and hate, that's part and parcel of the indoctrination of the respective false belief system. If you don't subscribe to the doctrine of a particular false system, behaving in a certain manner, then you're chastised, treated poorly, or worse, killed, drug behind a truck, stoned, mutilated, whatever.
False belief systems are extremely dangerous. Folks who truly embrace false belief systems (radicals / true believers) then use their false belief system as justification / indemnification for terrible behavior, like stoning women, killing gays, bombing buildings, putting folks in jail, or running an aircraft into a building.
The cycle HAS to be broken. It starts at home by breaking the from near-birth brain washing cycle of these beliefs. Children need to be taught truth based beliefs.
Will it happen? Likely not in the near term. Man has much evolution yet to go, but...we're making headway.
The long history of evil in the world has always been closely tied to these false belief systems.
