I have my first triathlon coming up this april and I was wondering if it's acceptable to strip bare at transitions. I mean for the swim i plan on wearing a speedo and then the bike i thought i'd wear my bike shorts though the ride is short only 26 miles maybe i would just pull some shorts over my speedo? anyways if i wear the bike shorts, i would then want to change into my running shorts at the second transition. i dont want to be the only guy getting naked and everyone looking, anyone know what most of the guys do at triathlons?

all the ones i've been too and have seen most people wear jammers and do the whole tri wearing them. Saves a ton of time just throw on your shoes and mabye a shirt and your on your way.

Yeah, just get a pair of tri shorts. You swim, bike, and run in them. They're comfortable. That way you're not stripping down to the bare. In fact, most tris have a regulation against it anyway. So even if you were an exhibitionist wannabe, it would be the last tri you did!

Good luck on your first event!

Just be sure to do a couple of training swims in the tri short-they are bulkier--and use plenty of vaseline!
    Good luck!

you will waste a lot of time in your transition if you change like that. Most people wear somethnig you can wear all through. That said, when I have marshalled people have got naked (UK) and I wouldn´t mind you doing it icon_lol.gif

    Which races were they?! LOL.

I've never seen anyone naked in transition at any of the triathlons I've participated in or marshalled for. The only place I've seen folks getting naked at a race is in the changing room.

Like others have said - wear tri shorts, or an all-in-one tri suit. They were designed specifically for this purpose. You want to keep your time in transition to an absolute minimum (i.e. seconds).

Incidentally, there are a lot of good tips on transition practice, and other aspects of triathlon (e.g. open-water swimming), on YouTube - worth having a look, if you haven't already.

Let us know how the race goes!

    hahaha eastern counties circuit ;)

BTW to OP you should practice your transitions: if you do it badly it´s a very easy way of pouring away the valuable seconds you worked for in the swim and bike.

Tim.... sadly the people getting naked were not the ones I wanted to. icon_rolleyes.gif Swimming changing rooms were much better for that.

I would need to conduct a lengthy investigation to answer the OPs question. With lots of pictures.

not only will you be the only guy naked, but pics of you will end up on the 'net and maybe even a video of you stripping on youtube icon_smile.gif you may or may not want that to happen, so at least consider wearing a wet suit with cycling shorts underneath (is the water warm enough to swim in just a speedo, or are you a glutton for punishment?)

It's actually not permitted to be bare in the open transition areas. In Ironman or ultra Ironman distance races, there's a tent for each gender to strip down and change from the swim to the bike, since those races are too long to be uncomfortable without bloody chafing, etc.

Buy a good pair of tri-shorts. DeSoto is probably the best I've worn. They have a small pad to make the bike a comfortable ride, but not big enough to be obtrusive in the swim or run. It's worth the $60 investment. You won't have to change at all. Plus, you will definitely stick out as not knowing what you're doing if you have an outfit change at every transition. Wearing speedos is not only very uncomfortable, but also considered very "old school". Great for swim practice, but utterly impractical in a triathlon.

You can also opt for a one-piece singlet. There again, no changing necessary. Though they look hot on the right bod (especially after the swim icon_smile.gif), I personally don't find that there's enough support.

Just a speedo in April?? Is your race in Mexico?

My first race this year is the end of May and the water is usually 60 degrees. Waaay too cold for these old bones. I wear my trisuit under my wetsuit - always bring both a full wetsuit and a half suit and let the water temp dictate which I wear.

Yea, get the tri shorts and wear all the way through.

I did my first tri in about 12 years in 2008...I had a speedo to swim in and was the only one there in one. Felt a bit conspicuous but "oh well..."

As mentioned above, separate changing tents in Ironmans...you see stripping down in those races...might be a good goal to set... icon_smile.gif

definitely a pair of tri shorts and singlet.

there's no changing for triathlon really, with all the clothing companies doing a good job in design. for race clothing options.

plus you will get DQ'd for being naked in Transition icon_sad.gif now wouldn't be good for your first race.

Definitely look at the rule book before you start the race, there are a number of things besides being naked that could get you disqualified. Speedo sells tri shorts if you're determined to wear a speedo.

Save yourself the transition time and angst and get tri-shorts, you'll be glad you did.

This is a question better directed to the triathlon organizers. If it were in Europe, for instance, there wouldn't be a problem. In the regressive, neurotic conservative US, the police could step in.

If you have a support team, or just friends, perhaps they could hold up towels or something while you changed clothes. Otherwise, a multi-purpose outfit, as mentioned above, may be your only choice.

being realistic, the time wasted on a change of clothes is the issue. Get a tri short...

Or tri-suit, a one-piece garment suitable for all three disciplines. Made of lycra.

Check out my profile, in it there are two snapshots of me in a tri-suit during my competitive days.

I have to agree with most that either tri shorts or a tri suit is the way to go. Remember before you start doing whole wardrobe changes it's a LOT easier to take time out of your transition than to make up those minutes on the bike or in the run.

Above all have fun at your first race an let us know how it goes!
