I don't often take issue with posts from you guys, but in this case I'm going to have to point out that it really doesn't consider Williams as a human being undergoing a serious surgery, and his rational desire to maximize his survival. I'm glad your mother was able to have surgery in Canada, but not every variety of surgery, even to the same itty bitty valve, is the same. And it is quite possible that there are alternative surgery techniques available that are generally better, even if the one used in your mothers' case worked for her. I'm certain both Williams and his doctors chose a course that was best for him and his particuar issue.
I'm also sure people can go back and forth all day long about this. "US medical technology and surgery technique is better!" "Well that doesn't matter if you don't have access to it!" Blah blah blah. But at base, I really don't think it's fair to impugn Williams' personal choice in the matter.

Williams is the Canadian version of US Republican. As far as we know he paid privately for the Miami surgery.
The surgery he had is the one Mom had here in BC in Nov 2008.. On top of using a bovine valve for her, they had to use a ring to tighten the tri-cuspid and also remove an appendage from the heart that it had developed to contain the excess blood. Then, they had to go into the heart and smooth the chambers as there was a considerable amount for build up that had created a rough surface that they thought could exacerbate clotting. She was on thinners for one year. Thanks to the guys on Realjock, she became motivated and now works out 3 times a week. She turned 77 on Feb 7th.
She was diagnosed on a Friday and had surgery 8 days later. She had top-notch care.
Here, this is when it all happened.
