Cleaning up after yourself

So recently I've noticed that guys don't spray down the machines after they use it. Im kind of a clean freak and it really bothers me when guys dont do this, icon_mad.gif Sometimes when I'm done with what ever I'm doing there is always some guy who is waiting for me to finish up and they will just wave me off if I start to clean it for them

I was wondering, is it common to not spray after you use the machine and I'm just being too sensitive? or is it a problem that should be addressed?

If it is a problem should I say something to the guys who don't spray down after use?

It was a big enough problem for you to post about it.

I suggest you spray and wipe the equipment both before and after, since apparently nobody else does it.

If someone is waiting and waves you on go ahead and move on.

Do you also work out in long sleeves and long pants and wear flipflops in the shower? It would be ironic for you to come home with MRSA or athletes foot after being the only one concerned about it

I get really annoyed when guys just don't pick up after themselves and don't rerack the weights after use. I am not that particular about spraying the equipment after use but I don't like seeing garbage laying on the floor or weights that were not reracked after use, that is just very inconsiderate on some of these guys part. But again some people don't give a damn about anything or anyone.

that spray shit they use, it's sets my ashma off, down stairs in the weight room no one uses it but up in the cardio room it gives me hell (so much so, I only get to spend 5 minutes in there at a time) I do use the spray on the cardio stuff, but I spray it into the paper towel to avoid getting "bounce back" and wipe stuff down, other people just spray it willy nilly and dont give a damn.

Our gym actually stopped checking out workout towels.

I've started cleaning benches before and after I use them. icon_neutral.gif

I sweat and slobber all over the place when I run a couple of miles daily. I work in a pharmacy and see the flu and staph infection come through all the time. I totally clean up as much as possible.

I totally find it funny though (living in very conservative Alabama) to see two sexy bodybuilders and you can tell which one is the bitch because he seems to always be the one cleaning the equipment.

That's the worst thing. If it's not wasting my time before my work out looking for the right weights, it's guys who don't wipe down the benches.

Same thing in yoga. I have my own mat now. It only took one bout of pink eye to solve the problem.

If you come in my house in my gym, you better spray. Preferably on a nice white bar towel then wipe.

    Nuff said.

And by the way, there is the shower before and after that most important of male acts.

You are not alone in this, dislike it equally. But looks like some people just don't care, so I wipe it before and after using any equipment.

erm, don't you guys use towels under you? that's something you see everywhere in my gym (and every other gym I've been too) everyone puts down towels on the benches, seats and mats.

I don't get how you guys are getting freaked out by the sweat.

thats a good idea and I might start doing that, the whole issue with the sweat is just that fact that its unsanitary & idc if you think im being a pussy or too sensitive its just part of my OCD that I'm a freak about being clean besides you never know what the guy that just used the bench has on his skin

I don't mind in the least guys not cleaning the benches or putting the weights back. I'm not a big sweater to begin with and when I'm done putting the weights back on the rack is just a bonus, after all I'm there to lift weights.
BUT, I do have issues with all the crap that goes on in the locker room. What gives with people who "Stake Out" areas by spreading their shit all over the place so no one else can change.
And while I'm on my soap box...KNOCK IT OFF WITH ALL THE SPRAY CRAP"!!!!!!!! Don't you get the hint? You are the reason everyone starts to cough after you douse your self with pit spray, body spray, foot spray, hair spray etc.........I just took a shower and don't appreciate smelling like a two dollar whore!

never thought you where being sensitive or a pussy mate, I just found it odd since I'd assumed you were sitting on towels and stuff, since you aren't I can understand, I'm a heavy sweater, I can and do leave puddles hahaha but I clean them up always, although I don't use that cleaning spray (no one does really) however I use the towel I have for sitting/laying on when I do leave sweat behind.

cleaning up after yourself would help stop the spread of B.O. that occurs when sweaty funky gymnast vilify the weight equipment they use and don't clean up afterward for the next unsuspecting person to come in contact.

but this isn't the only thing some people need to work on.

in public restrooms, making sure you flushed your business and that you don't leave sediments behind for the next person to have to deal with.

Washing your hands after using the public restroom. How hard is it to take a paper towel and turn on the faucet and wash, but many people fail to do this. icon_eek.gif

This part in my mind equals it's a "your problem" situation. If you're OCD even mildly, chances are that if someone did wipe it down it wouldn't be good enough or something else would bother you. If it's just a joke, hmm....

My theory is that the more we deep sanitize everything, the more susceptible we will be to germs because our body won't have any immunity power. I'm a teacher so chances are if I'm going to get sick it won't be from the gym but from work. I ain't wiping shit. I am there to work out and get out.

Neat freak or not, Staph infections / wounds are pretty serious (and ugly). I used to wipe the machines down but now I just wipe my sweat off; I do sweat a lot. I simply use sanitizer that the gym provides after I finish and just shower.

I wipe the equipment after I'm done with it if I leave any sweat on it...others do, others don't. Most folks do have a towel with them. In any case, all the machines in my gym get cleaned daily around 9am by the gym staff.

It can't be any worse than the mud one would come into contact with playing rugby or football, is my take on the matter, as long as people are clean before their workout and have a shower after, and don't have any open cuts on them.

I used to be a clean freak, but I decided to stop worrying about it. I worry enough about other things as it is. I haven't died yet, lol. But granted, I do hear about gym infections from time to time, so perhaps I'm being naive.

In all my years of going to gyms, I don't recall ever seeing someone "spray" the machine after use. Wiping it off with a towel if they leave it sweaty, but spray?

I work out at the YMCA here in Wichita. I go at various times of the day and folks tend to do a good job cleaning up after themselves, but not always.

I always clean the machines and benches after I'm done. I picked up MRSA a couple years ago at the Y and was out of the gym for almost a year dealing with it and avoiding spreading it. Now, I make sure to clean before I lay on any benches and anywhere I have touched.

My usual method is getting a towel when I walk in and generously spraying it with the disinfectant and then carrying it with me as I workout wiping things off and occasionally re-spraying it as I go.

My suggestion would be grab the cleaning towel and spray it down before you need it so you can wipe off the machine before you leave it. This way it will be ready for before you use the machine in case you are concerned about the previous user not cleaning it off.

It's funny that I came across this today. This morning, after doing my 10-minute cool down walk on the treadmill at the end of my workout, I cleaned off my machine AND the two machines to my right that a couple of older women were leaning all over and then just walked away from. icon_confused.gif
