The Canadian gov't almost collapsed and Canadians almost took to the streets in a spasm of blind fury after the Throne speech on Wednesday. It wasnt due to the massive budget deficit the gov't announced that caused this shades-of-the-French-Revolution reaction in normally docile Canadians, but rather a suggestion that the gov't would review an alleged sexist statement in a hoary and venerated official national document, and make it more gender-neutral. In a clear demonstration that Canada allegedly hates women, the gov't was forced to back down in the face of the fury of Canadian citizenry and not change a few words in their.....wait for it.....national anthem, O Canada ... icon_rolleyes.gif

Tories flip-flop on changes to national anthem

"... The senator who came up with the idea, Ontario Conservative Nancy Ruth, said she was "surprised" and "disappointed" by the reversal.

Ruth, a proud feminist who was appointed by former Liberal prime minister Paul Martin, said Friday she can't believe such a small adjustment has caused such a stir.

"If there's been such backlash, then this is another example, for me, of hatred against women." "

I would like to wait and hear from meninlove, 2 Canadians whose reasoned judgment & opinions I always respect. Canada is not my country, so I'll hold my tongue on something political that doesn't directly concern me, though I have some thoughts on this. Doug & Bill...?

Ooops forgot about my thoughts on changing our national anthem..
Again? it wouldn't be the first time in my lifetime they've changed it and to be honest most of us don't really care that much. We're not and never have been virulant flag wavers like Americans and the British. We don't need all that crap and hoopla banged into our heads everyday to know we're living in the best country on the planet.

My family has flip-flopped across the border a couple of times. My branch of the family left Canada at the end of the 19th century after moving there in the last quarter of the 18th from New York state. I probably have 4th cousins in Ontario, but not sure.

If I knew their names, I would know that I had them, wouldnt I, eh?

I have a lot of family buried in Font Hill, Ontario, now part of Pelham, near Niagra Falls.....we didnt go far into Canada ... icon_lol.gif

I leave the cdn tracking to my 4th cousins in Illinois. I am tracking the origins of the family in NY before they moved.

And I have to say, you are taking the near collapse of your country with a great stiff upper lip!

My folks are from the UK. We're the only Canadians (7 in total) in our known and still living family . A few are still in the UK, but more of us are scattered around the US now.
I'm actually doing the ancestry com thing myself time permitting. It's free at the library as opposed to paying at home.

    Absolutely they did!!!!

They all did and are doing exceedingly well in America as does everyone don't they.
All live in grand two storey colonials and every one of them, babies too have a Cadillac, nothing less no sir. It was sooo embarassing in the summers of 70's as a kid pulling up the driveway to my uncles beautiful two storey colonial in Poughkeepsie in dads Marquis. Worse it wasn't even a Grand Marquis.
Their house was chock a block full of neat stuff. I remember the beautiful central stairway, the Hammond organ, a color tv. I think they had a color set in every room iirc..pretty sure they did. Maybe not the bathroom but aunty had toilet paper that matched the wallpaper in that guest bathroom. We only had the Eatons catalogue in our outhouse back in Canada. Moms finally had proper plumbing put in about 5 years ago now and I smuggle Charmin from Kroger across the border weekly.

lol, what's this? Caslon, this is such a jack-a-napes antic, heheh.

    Oh, teh dramaz.

    What it says..
    'True patriot love,
    In all thy sons command'

What they were changing it to..

    "True patriot love
    In thou dost us command"

What we thought it could be, IF changed

    "Tue patriot love,
    In all of us command,"

Really, the furore is partly because Canada used to have a wonderful flag called the Red Ensign

    Here: IMG_1428.jpg

It was never our official flag but was and is well loved.

What we had as official was the Union Jack:

    union20jack.jpg

Which was really just a flag stating we were the dominion of Canada under British rule basically.

So then the shit hit the proverbial fan. Most wanted the Red Ensign ( it's what Canada fought under) but the 60's were upon us, new thinking in and modern art in, and so the current flag came to be, as plain as wallpaper and looking oddly reminiscent of marijuana ( depending on how many intoxicants one had consumed that day).

Now us Canadians, though politically correct in many ways, have begun looking askance at the blanding of everything. As well, the new phrase for the anthem is rather cumbersome in its attempt to mimic the language of the time the anthem was first penned.

...after all mankind has not yet been changed to peoplekind. icon_wink.gif

We're drawing a comparison; the changing of flags and the changing of the anthem.
We're thinking that change is not always a good thing, or always a necessity.
