lucky you! my narrow minded, homophobic, three generation-throw back brother would sooner shove a pine cone up his uretha than willingly walk into a gay ar. icon_rolleyes.gif

I go with my straight brother when I visit him in San Francisco. I don't really like it, but do it more to placate him as he enjoys it.

I can't enjoy even a straight bar with my family. I need my own space.

I bet more people would go to bars with you if you took off that silly ass hat.

Yeah, kinda surprises me, too. He was somewhat anti-gay until I came out to him, and since he moved to SF, he has been much more open, accepting, and willing to learn more. However, he still believes many of the stereotypes and all that, and says it's more comfortable with me. I think it is so if he is asked, he can say he's only there to be with his gay brother. If he went alone or with other friends, someone might think he is gay, heaven forbid.

My brother and fiance went to a gay club with me. Watched me make out and grope a guy. All he could see was how he remembered me being at 16, so it shocked him a little

I have taken my mom to Bourbon Street here in San Diego before... Piano night. It was a good time. The pianist played some oldies that she remembered and was singing along to.

Not with my own relatives, but with my partner's and him, and also with the straight relatives of our gay friends. We never take them to a place when it's having something risque, like underwear contests, male strippers, etc, because we know they wouldn't like that. Yet the very same place can be quite tame, at a different day & time.

For that reason I would NOT recommend the Boardwalk in Fort Lauderdale, for instance, mostly about gay strippers and boys running around in speedos there. Nor the Ramrod leather bar, with some pretty heavy action out back in the patio, unless your brother wants to see that.

Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors (aka NE 4th Ave on some maps, also Cty 811) has a ton of gay places, all of them OK for your purposes. Among them: Sidelines is a sports bar, Georgie's Alibi a landmark, but crowded at night and sometimes has drag shows, The Manor, a new place with drag shows many nights and other acts. Just up the street from Wilton Drive is Scandals on NE 6th Ave, if either of you are into CW. I think the Alibi might be your best best, except perhaps if they're having drag, which isn't too often.

Send me direct RJ email when your trip is getting close, and tell me what you want in a place (big, small, loud, quiet, neighborhood, theme, dancing, whatever) and I'll give you more details. And hopefully you can meet my partner & me.

Yea, it can be really annoying when you're in a crowded bar and everyone feels entitled to cop a feel. Once or twice is cool, even flattering, but constantly?

My brother goes about once a year with me. But he usually insists that either my gay best friend or one of my straight female friends protect him.
