Shakers: The Original Gay Community?

    They believed men and women should be kept apart. Sex between a man and a woman was a sin. The Shakers built stylish furniture, were great at designing and building architecturally stunning housing, and some believe were true minimalists, a hundred years before the minimalist movement caught on.

    Oh, and lets not forget the choreography and dancing......hmmmmm

    yes, it induced a trance , somewhat like twirling dervishes with their amazing skirts.

    but shakers practiced chastity... hardly a background for homosexuality .

    hmm...perhaps the shakers were hung up on what Paul said about how it would be best if everyone were like him - celibate. It really is in the bible. Talk about a book that contradicts itself.

    That book is so darned dangerous.

    I think Celtic's on to something here...a little like those absolutely cross-your-heart-honestly-celibate priests.
