I was watching Bill Maher last night and he and Arianna Huffington were discussing banks that are too big to fail. They talked about moving all of your money to smaller community banks. I did this a year ago and I could not be happier. Any body else? What are your thoughts?

I did this a few years ago as well. The rates are not quite as good, but I like supporting the local business.

Credit union all the way here, low loan rates, higher deposit rates, low fees, great customer service, based locally in the community. Will never use a bank again as long as I can help it.

we need to move away from mega-sized financial corporations, they support a huge infra-structure that consumes a large amount of capital, if only in bonuses.

the bill maher program also pointed out, that small banks are also lobbying to keep from being regulated, so in this case, size doesn't matter, lol.

at this time, there is too much power in the hands of too few, whether in financial institutions, the media, in corporations, even the government which now hides behind the veil of homeland security and allows the tentacles of special interests to form a parasitical relationship with it.

So they fucking should. They always moan about regulation and how they want a free market etc etc and then when they fuck up like during the financial crisis they want a government handout.

Applying the same market principles they covet so much I would have let the fuckers sink. I still can't believe no one has gone to jail and that the investment arm of banks haven't been split from high street/retail.

I spent years working for a small - hometown bank. I can assure you from within the banking system - dealing with those large megabanks was a nightmare. My mortgage was sold to one, but for all of my everyday banking I stick with the small local banks. You will get better service every time. IMHO.

Nope. I kept mine at a mega bank. I saw too many local banks go under or get acquired by other banks. Also, none of the local banks are even close to offering a solid online or mobile banking experience. I visit my bank maybe once or twice a year for random things like cashiers checks. But the rest of the time, I manage all of my accounts online.

I've had several deposit accounts for the past 16 years at a very big bank. I prefer them because of their fraud department. When they see unusual activity on my accounts, they immediately contact me. I'm not sure if small banks have the same service but I definitely appreciate the safeguard practices of big banks.

I've been sticking with Citibank for decades because
    my first job was there.
I get half a percent interest on my savings account and
    customer service is a nightmare.
(And they thank me thank me thank me endlessly)
I think you've all convinced me to move on.

Credit unions all the way - or a community bank. Please stay away from the vultures that are robbing the world.
