The Diocese in D.C. was in a pickle. Defy the poop, I mean Pope, or to get drug into a list of civil suits. The easy out was to not provide benefits to anyone.
This is yet another argument for why we should have universal health care as all regular countries do. The U.S. is the ONLY 1'st world country that doesn't. Health care should NOT be tied to our jobs, causing "job lock", and killing the backs of small employers. Instead, everyone should have a single provider. The current system is ruining the playing field for small business, denies folks early treatment, and / or benefits, keeps folks from evolving their careers, and lets folks like those with false belief systems do this sort of crap. No person should have to work for assholes because they are scared of losing their health care.
I don't think the church did this to be vindictive. I think they did it because if they did it based on sexual preference there would be no way to defend that discrimination in court, and, they knew it.
Health care IS, in regular places, a given, just like police, fire, schools, libraries, and highways. Only here do we treat our citizens worse than our buildings and our pets. That's, very much indeed, telling about our greed as a people and how we view our fellow country man and how we allow corporations to exploit us for maximum profit instead of doing the right thing.
