After the passage of their rite to marry in DC an unusual number of readers have complained and canceled subscriptions over the publishing of a photo of two men kissing on the front page.
Many of the readers used anti-gay slurs, Andrews said. Twenty-seven subscribers canceled. One emailed one of the reporters who worked on the story to say: “That kind of stuff makes normal people want to throw up. People have kids who are being exposed to this crap. I will be glad when your rag goes out of business. Real men marry women.”

The Post's omnibudsman had a very nice response

Andrew AlexanderNews photos capture reality. And the prominent display reflects the historic significance of what was occurring. The recent D.C. Council decision to approve same-sex marriage was the culmination of a decades-long gay rights fight for equality. Same-sex marriage is now legal in the District. The photo of Ames and Ariga kissing simply showed joy that would be exhibited by any couple planning to wed – especially a couple who previously had been denied the legal right to marry.

There was a time, after court-ordered integration, when readers complained about front-page photos of blacks mixing with whites. Today, photo images of same-sex couples capture the same reality of societal change.

27 people have cancelled their subscriptions. That's nothing. Hardly worth the story.

It actually demonstrates the opposite to me. How FEW people cared.

For the 27 rednecks, oops i mean subscribers, they lost, I do believe they'll get a LOT more than 27 new subscribers. Congratulations D.C. !

Golly, isn't it a little unfair to call them rednecks? I mean, where's the love, where's the humanity?

I wonder if they are equally freaked when they let their children watch movies or games where people are blown up, hacked up, shot up, etc Or what about over sexed music videos where women are sex objects?

If you can't be tolerant of violence being shown to children or the objectification of women, then, we have nothing left to discuss. I'm sorry if that sounds intolerant, it's not, it's just my view.

You know what President Kennedy said about DC right?

It's the perfect blending of Northern charm and Southern efficiency.

That would be a display of intolerance of bitches. I'll have none of it. Uh oh, does that make me intolerant? Conundrum.
