Not getting one, it doesn't meet any need I have at present. I already have an iMac and a MacBook Pro, plus an iPhone. An iPad would be redundant for my existing purposes. I can imagine it being useful in some business, classroom, and travel environments, which do not currently apply to me.

I thought long and hard about an iPad, for a number of reasons:

    1) I have a well running though slightly older Powerbook G4
    2) My "On the Go" needs pretty much focus on media viewing, with occasional need for office productivity
    3) The price point is a more affordable alternative than a whole new laptop.

I think I'm going to save up for a new laptop though, simply because if I lose the computer, I lose the connection to the iPad & the iPhone. BUT, an option would perhaps be a desktop computer with an iPad for on the go, because it then affords me with all the memory space I could almost ever need, while paired with the media & productivity needs that could be sufficed by an iPad.

I would suggest looking into getting a Lenovo idea pad for note taking (or any mini laptop.) The price is economical starting around $300.00 (depending on the brand), and they can multi-task, and usually have built in web cams. Taking notes on the Ipad appears to be very uncomfortable especially if your classroom lacks a proper desk or is in an auditorium and I can not imagine typing on it being more efficient then a normal keyboard . I take my mini laptop with me to class and it works great for notes, emails, the web and messaging, but I only use it when I'm at school. Once I get home I import everything to my desktop

Here is a link if you're interested in more information.

I will not be getting one. . . YET. I want to see how Apple's Book Store is going to fair first. The only practical reason I would buy one is to use it as an eBook reader, as I'm not too fond of the Kindle or Nook. Also it gives people time to learn how to jailbreak the damn thing which will then make it much more useful.

If people are contemplating getting a tablet, this is a good chart of tablets coming out 2010 which can help you make a decision

iPad... good design; not fully implemented. More of a big iPod Touch.. even with 3G; no text messaging possible; no cellular voice; no Skype or similar; no Flash video support (many business not just news or 'play' sites use Adobe Flash), and although Apple's focus on HTML 5 is fine; not supporting Flash, used by most of the websites in the world, is totally anal. If they added Flash support; allow multitasking (likely in iPhone 4.0 software, and an iPad update); provide for 'bcc' messages (can't do that in iPhone either for a list or group of friends or clients); and have at least one camera (preferably front facing for video conferencing); I'd buy it gladly. Sure; then it would be more of a sub for a netbook or full laptop.

As it is will sell well anyway; but to Kindle-type buyers (commuters and students), plus of course corporations; but there again the software is strictly limited. For me I'll update to the new MacBook Pro when it comes out with an I-7 and USB 3.0 in the Spring; which will be more logical with my iPhone and new iMac (excellent by the way).

(My first post since joining; cheers everyone)...

So far, Apple seems to be marketing this has a home device. Something you use to watch movies or read books, while you sit on your couch or on your toilet. icon_lol.gif

Yes, I'll be getting the 32g 3G iPad.

Although I wont have the bookstore when its first launched, I do have a ton of books already in PDF format and I HATE reading them on my notebook, it's uncomfortable and I'd like to FINALLY be able to discard the books I have taking up room and being annoying in my place..

Plus, watching tv shows in bed, playing games.. mmmm

Flash I couldn't give a shit about anyway, except for youtube I've flash disabled for everything else, it's a hindrence these days, a dying technology that has stagnated long ago but still kicking around, like CD's and DVD's

    Gimme a damned iPad!

well I wouldnt buy an Apple product in the first place, but if I did want a tablet like device - I would wait around for the Slate PC's or just buy one of the current brand of similar devices (that have alredy been out for over 10 years)...

Even many of the Apple fans over at Arstechnica (and around the webd) are very unimpressed with this thing...

I think the iPad just sucks for several reasons:

    1. Poor hardware design. The iPad is just an iTouch on steroids.

    2. No multitasking. I didn't care about this when it comes to my iPhone but the iPad is supposed to replace netbooks and it can't even multitask???

    3. No flash support. Again I didn't care about the lack of flash on my iPhone but I don't really spend a long time browsing the web on it. But the iPad has no excuse whatsoever to not support a web standard such as flash. Yet they promote it as THE BEST WEB EXPERIENCE and THE BEST VIDEO EXPERIENCE, what????? 80% of the most popular sites on the net uses flash on their pages, how can it be the best browsing experience if this content is just not available and how can it be the best video experience when u can't access more than 70% of the videos on the web??

    4. No camera. Come on seriously?

    5. No tethering from iPhone, forcing users to get a second dataplan, u gotta be fucken kidding me.

    I'm done for now

    PS: to liltanker

flash is important nowdays, it's far away from being a dying technology since more sites add flash content to their pages everyday, specially cause there's not a good standard for streaming video online so flash is the standard. Until HTML 5 finally takes over flash then Ill say farewell to flv and swf but right now like it or not u can't browse the web fully without flash. Apple can perfectly support flash just like the upcoming Slate from HP does.

I don't care. People can buy whatever they want to buy. I just take exception to Steve Jobs' claim that netbooks are useless and that the iPad is a netbook killer. I think that would only be true if your world revolves around iTunes and the AppStore. Otherwise, Steve Jobs is full of shit.

However, I have to say that the iPad might have one good use.. A basic communication tool for grandparents to use. They can use it to send/receive email, view online photos, surf the web, update their Facebook status, and so on. All without the complications of a full blown computer. In this scenario, a limited use device might be a good thing.

The biggest problem with the iPad is that it doesn't support Flash. How can a webpad not support a technology that's used everywhere?

What are people talking about Flash being old and slow? That's crazy! It's a very good technology. You can use it to do all sorts of things beyond just video and RIA's!
The reason why Apple doesn't support it is that Flash programs would compete with programs from Apple's application store. Apple blocks more than Flash by the way too.
