I'm considering renting an apartment for 10-14 days next September in Barcelona (BCN) - as a post B-day celebration. My plan is to open it up and have friends (4 to 6+) stop in for all or part of the rental period. Home base would be BCN, with some side trips along the coast, and a bit in-land. A return to Mallorca may also be in order.

Any insight into what areas of Barcelona are worth considering, which would be close to a good mix of things - bars, restaurants, clubs, sites, as well as the beach. Ideally would like a cool neighborhood that was near the subway (so could walk there and jet around BCN easily using the subway).

Also any suggestions on looking for places online would be great.

It's a ways off, but I figured it's probably better to start sooner on researching things than later.

    Thanks!

I'm going there in a few days. I'll post anything I find out if it's relevant.

For my trip I'm staying around Las Ramblas and Passeig de Gracia. It's within a few blocks of a major metro line intersection, so it's convenient to most of the city.

tripadvisor has a section on "vacation rentals" and then you can plug in your specifics.
    http://www.tripadvisor.com/
i rented a loft in rome for a week, it was hands down the best accomodation in my 3 weeks in europe.
my preference was something NOT on ground floor- ans some building with a locked front door. busy commercial streets are noisy, but safe.
make sure the apartment has a safe...for your passports etc. some dont.
    have fun.

Staying in an apartment is a great idea, they are so much cheaper and comfortable. You only really want to stay near the centre if you are only there for about 2 weeks. You will be able to find apartments all over las Ramblas, Eixample and Born, One of these would be perfect.

    Try http://www.apartime.com for apartments barcelona

Well, having returned from Barcelona now, I can tell you the metro there is super convenient and affordable. You can get to just about any part of town in no time. Cost is €7.85 for a 10 trip pass.

They also sell daily unlimited ride passes, but the 10 trip pass probably works out better price wise.

I really enjoyed staying in the Rambla de Cataluña area. The Passeig de Gracia metro station is a main junction station connecting several lines, as well as a station for the Renfe line that goes to the airport and destinations beyond Barcelona.
