My Dear Stoner.

My best friend is a stoner and I'm getting fed up with it.
I've tried telling him in a non-chalant way that he does smoke a lot of weed and maybe he should find a better hobby. But it doesn't work like anyone who has tried telling a smoker to quit will know. We meet everyday but now I feel it's just a big waste of time. Then again I'm not going to turn my back on my best mate.
so... what can I do. Punching his face is not going to help even though that's all I'd like to do now.

Have you ever thought weed isn't as bad as media portrays it to be? Have you ever thought that it is HIS personal choice to smoke weed? Most people don't realize that weed is less harmful than alcohol. Health wise, I would always choose a bowl over a shot. Show me an example where someone has died purely from the use of weed, or if someone has ever overdosed on weed. It is physically impossible to overdose on marijuana. Who knows how many over the counter medications can kill a person if taken in excess, including alcohol.

All things in moderation, but weed is a hell of a lot better than alcohol and tobacco combined. Look into the history of the plant, including its benefits, and you'll begin to understand.

Sounds like you want to be his mother, not his friend.

Maybe you and your friend have different interests. Maybe YOU should find a new hobby.

Hanging around with stoned people can be really tedious and boring.

Depending on what your issues are with it - I'm not going to assume what they are and jump your shit like posters above me had - then be honest with him about them and be ready to move on.

I'm well aware of the benefits of it but also the drawbacks. And personally I'd rather have the whole nation stoned than drunk. But there is a difference between doing it every once in a while and being constantly baked. I've watched him spend the whole weeks where he hardly leaves the living room. Just weed, tv and videogames. That is clearly not a healthy behavior. I would be just as pissed of if he was spending the whole days drinking booze.

I guess that's true, I consider myself a stoner (smoke almost daily), yet I get stuff done. I finally quit smoking cigarettes too, w00t!

Are you fucking this guy or what? What's the big deal? Let him do his own thing, and you do yours.

If you happened to be a friend, and you approached me with the same complaint, I'd probably laugh my ass off, bake - and consume - some cookies, pop in Final Fantasy XIII, and avoid you until you pulled your head out of your ass.

...And he's always talking about doing this and that and then nothing happens because the only thing he ever get's done is getting high.

    do nothing.
it's not your choice, it's not your life and not your decision.

the only person whose decisions you can make are your own.
if his pot smoking is problematic for you then distance yourself from him, if you love him as a friend then accept him as he is. chances are this isn't the only time in life you will not see eye to eye with him, that's part of what makes friendships so wonderful, they teach you acceptance and how not to judge.

He's a pothead/burnout/whatever you want to call it. You can either accept this about him or not, but you can't control him or what he does. You can only control your attitude regarding it. Trying to guilt/judge him into changing because you want him to is only going to create resentment between you two.

    Puff puff, pass.

Then why post an OP and make an issue out of it?

Oh, and I'm not your buddy. I have plenty of buddies ... don't need anymore right now, but thanks.

    Things I've learned:

    1) If you are concerned about one of your friends, you are a meddling asshole.

    2) Pot smokers get real touchy if they feel someone is dissing them.

Smoking pot really isn't that interesting... don't understand the obsession some guys have with it, especially the guys that are ALWAYS high and don't do shit with their life because they're high.

On a side note, how do some of these guys pay for their habit? weed isnt that cheep, and i have a hard time figuring out how you work a dead end job and afford to pay rent, buy food and smoke every day...
