Which do you guys think is better, in general, as a protein drink...Lean body or Muscle Milk? and why?

  • Mar 16, 2010 10:00 AM GMT
I had used both, but prefer real food (ie a yogurt or juice with some nuts) post workout. I use these 2 products when I forget to bring real food. I hate the taste of both drinks because they are way too sweet (even for the Chocolate flavors) I am not sure if these manufacturers think that they need to make their products that sweet to mask the disgusting taste of their drinks. I am often nauseated after downing 3/4 of the drink. I recently begin to bring with me some protein powders if I need the additional protein where I mix the flavored powder with the plain protein powder to cut down on the sweetness of the drink. The overall taste is still disgusting, but I find this mixture much more palatable and economical than spending $3 on each of these drinks.

    Lean body.

Tastes better to me (the chocolate flavor anyway) and has less fat and sugar. Also seems to have better quality ingredients overall.

I wish I could find a palatable protein powder though. All whey powders I have tasted make me want to vomit because of the aftertaste of rotten carrion. At least I can keep the Lean body drinks down, but they are expensive.

Muscle Milk of course. If you want lower fat content and higher protein you could always go with MONSTER MILK. VPX's protein drink tastes good as well.

I agree with the poster above, it is hard finding a protein powder that tastes as good as the RTDs.

MUSCLE MILK by far the best tasting protein ever, so many different flavors to choose from especially cake batter and brownie batter

Its higher in fat than some others but so what if you are working out hard and active, its not going to matter

I use Elite Whey Protein Isolate and love it...the mint chocolate flavor is muy bueno. It also mixes really well and apparently has a 90% absorption rate. It's relatively cheap, high in protein, and low fat/sugar/calories/cholesterol. Many of the protein supplements out there are high in cholesterol...something to watch out for.

The Lean Body powder isn't bad, but I thought the RTD tasted awful. Muscle Milk RTD tastes ok but my favorite RTD is Myoplex original.

but it does matter. Upon waking up and after a hard work out, you need a fast digesting protein. A protein powder with as much fat as Muscle Milk is not optimal since it slows down digestion.

Finally a topic I can relate to.

Muscle Milk is very fattening and I would stay away from it depending on your body type/goals. Some people say the extra fat is worth it because of the excellent taste/texture, but I don't feel it is the best option out there. After all... how many people out there actually take the time to savor this stuff?

If you have the money you can make your own protein blend, which will give you better control over the grams of carb/protein(whey/casein.) If you want a post work-out shake- mix in more whey/carbs.... if you want a bedtime shake- mix in more casein... and if you want an extreme weight gainers shake- well... go nuts.

Flavor isn't everything, but it can make the 30 seconds it will take you to consume this stuff that much more enjoyable. icon_neutral.gif

I like the Whole Foods brand of whey protein (vanilla). Blend with fresh or frozen strawberries, plain nonfat yogurt, and about a cup of fresh squeezed orange juice. Tastes great and you can add extra protein as needed. Very low fat in this recipe.

If you're looking to bulk, do a "protein stack" by mixing whey, soy, and casein proteins together. Soy and casein proteins enhance the effects of whey protien (source: Muscle & Body, March 2010 issue).

Although, Muscle Milk does taste very good! (and is effective)

when I was shopping around and trying to improve my diet I came across Muscle Milk and love it so far. I'm an ectomorph therefore have a pretty fast metabolism so the fat content is not an issue for me. You also have to keep in mind that too much protein is not good either. It overloads the liver and kidneys to process it and it gets wasted. It can also make you gain and accumulate fat. You should not eat more than 1.8-2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day - do the math - if you are exercising almost every day. Way less if you are sedentary. Most body builders take way too much protein!

I agree with MikemikeMike on this one, both these protein powders are crap. I have tried both of them and they both sucked big time. What a waste of hard earned money.

I don't care too much for any of the ready-to-drink protein products. Check the ingredients. They're full of vegetable oil. Muscle Milk has 2 or 3 types of oils. And Lean Body has at least 1 type of oil.

Stick with the powders. I use Lean Body MRP packets for post-workout nutrition. I add less water and add a teaspoon of sugar. Tastes much better.
