A couple of years ago my partner overheard some 20-somethings in a gay bar, talking about safe sex. One was telling the other that condoms were unnecessary, since HIV was something that "only infects those over 35."

The stupidity of young gays cannot be imagined. But don't tell them that. They have all the answers, and we older gays are the fools they love to ridicule.

Well, we're still alive, while they have a long way to go yet. Based on what I've seen, a lot of them will never make it.

I get so mad at my friends that dont use condoms. I dont get it. And not just gay dudes either...the whole "eh I'll just pull out" line is ridiculous these days. As much as I hate to use one I wrap it every time. Would rather get laid with a condom on than not at all.

You confuse your personal dislike for me with this very real issue. Read the facts that metta8 links here, and forget about me for a moment. This is more important than about either of us, or our feelings for each other.

All I can say to that is don't be hating. I'm 20 and I consider myself far frm ignorant and stupid. Stupid people are stupid people. Age really has nothing to do with it.

I've been HIV+ for six years, and the reasons I became infected haven't changed. The old approaches are stale. The same type of young guys end up doing the same type of thing. We were/are all pretty stupid.

It seems these come in waves. I read a similar article just five years ago, then it went down. Then it went up again. Stupidity is cyclical.

If I had a nickle for every time I had to pass a guy up because he refused to use a condom.... I'd have a couple bucks.

Of course, most guys I've run into who won't use the condoms are 20-somethings. Sorry guys LOL!

It's so easy to not catch HIV I don't understand how people keep getting it.
I wonder how skewed it is based on race though and environment.
Gay guys need to worry more about other diseases than just HIV as well, like intestinal parasites. Why isn't that ever discussed? Guys in gay porn don't even use protection when fingering a guy or doing oral-anal sex but they'll wear a condom..

You are correct. Stupidity transcends all age groups, and I often say here how stupid I am about one thing or another.

But this study suggests that regarding the matter of safe sex, young gay men are not acting wisely. That must be corrected.

Ya know, if I hated young gays, I'd keep my mouth shut, and let them kill themselves off. Instead, I want to slap them in the face, wake them up, tell them to stop acting foolishly. It is not in my own best interest that gay men commit suicide through stupid sexual practices, OK?

This is not a test - PUT THE DICK DOWN.

On a serious note, HIV has been on the rise for YEARS and shows no sign of decreasing. With more people infected and people living longer lives thanks to better medicine, we have a larger community viral load which increases the likelihood of infection for the next generation. Soon it will be 50% of all gay men that are infected, then it will be....When is enough, enough?

What is alarming is the silence and the apathy of the gay community. With thousands of infections each year alone in America where there are condoms, HIV organizations and education, you don't hear the outrage from the community how we should fight this epidemic. What do folks have to say about policing back rooms, sex parties, and hookup sites? It took years for folks to speak up about crystal meth which has destroyed many lives.

Simply put, if you fuck bareback today, you are playing russian roulette. This is not the 70's when no glove love was optional. In the age of HIV/AIDS, a new strategy is required. Less anonymous sex, more condoms, NO party and play, and routine STD/HIV tests.

Now back away from that dick, return it where you found it.

It's because of ads like these:
    patient_noflash.jpg
and the lack of ads like these:
    hiv_no_picnic_animated.gif

People don't die of HIV/AIDS anymore.... their body just falls apart and their bones just weaken at a much faster rate................

Ah, then perhaps I misinterpreted something you posted a few days ago, where you endorsed a remark bashing me. If I misunderstood, my apologies.

Time to be honest. This is a subject I feel strongly about.
I have been 20 and stupid and not used a condom twice, once was a spur of the moment half awake fuck with a guy I hardly knew and the other time I was pressured into (something that will never happen again) which is no excuse, you need to be strong when it comes to your safety.

Stupid people are stupid people it's true but until you reach your late twenties, I'm (26 - luckily I bloomed a tad early) there seems to be an attitude that since we all know the risks no one would have been careless enough to catch it therefore we must all be negative and be careless enough to catch it.

I'm not saying all HIV carries we're stupid or careless but the more casual sex you have where you don't know you the person's background the more risks you take.

Especially here in Japan where no one goes to get checked out, they all seem to think it's a foreign disease, but the idea that the man they're having sex with dated a guy last year who used to have a foreigner fetish.

I've taken two chances, NEVER again!

I respect anyone who had HIV and lets other knows about it, it's one of the few ways we can start making a real dent in the figures, regular testing and then being open and honest. People focus on the anal aspect but there are, a few, cases of oral sex passing on the virus. If someone contracts the disease because the guy they were having sex with didn't know/tell his HIV status that's a sad turn of events but if you do know then you should feel a moral obligation to stop it happening to someone else.

If a guy put me at risk without telling me I'd be so mad I'm not sure how I'd react.

Ok I’ll get off my high horse now.

We should not forget it's not just us gay guy treatened byt AIDS.
How often did I had to make a case for condom, speaking with young straigh buddies who argued that they 'knew the girl well' etc...
What about african women with no information available, and some thinking aspirine can protect you.
Then number of straight people completly unaware about their HIV status just scare me.

Most of us have done some foolish things in life. I will admit that yes I've had sex with men unprotected in the past. Very stupid, and I was very lucky (get tested regularly whether I've had sex or not). Will I do it again? NO WAY. One of my good friends has AIDS. Fortunately he's doing well. But puts a human face on it and is a reminder of what can happen, when it is easily prevented.

It scares me a lot when someone is ready to have sex without condom so easily. It is like they don't even care about their well being but the other guy's as well.

Syphilis rates in Toronto, Canada's gay capital, have doubled in the last ten years. I can't preach. I love bare sex, but I gave it up. All sex actually. It's just not worth it. You don't even know what you can get from kissing.
