    GLBT Activists Arrested in DC

    [quote]
As quickly as dozens of GLBT activists -- including past Instinct cover guy and leading man of 2009 Lt. Dan Choi -- chain themselves to the fence surrounding the White House to call attention to President Obama's inaction on a DADT repeal, DC police and the Secret Service are taking them to jail.

Today is a big day for DADT repeal attention, what with Kathy Griffin's rally and the blogswarm.

Some in the community have tired of letter-writing and donating to prestigious GLBT lobbying groups and have called for civil disobedience of this nature to finally get things done in Washington. How do you feel about this approach?

I am afraid it will be buried by the health-care debate, maybe John Stewart will pick it up.

It's a risky gamble, but it adds some much-needed spine to the discussion from our corner.

Police officers are blocking the gates of the White House with yellow tape and are pushing back about 100 protesters, who are chanting DADT repeal slogans and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Choi was speaking at the HRC rally at Freedom Plaza when he asked the group's executive director, Joe Solmonese, if he would march to the White House. Pietrangelo was discharged from the military under DADT, while Choi's discharge is pending. Choi is the founder of Knights Out, a West Point alumni organization supporting LGBT soldiers.

"You've been told that the White House has a plan," Choi told rally protesters. "But we learned this week that the president is still not fully committed. ... Following this rally, I will be leading [the protest] to the White House to say 'enough talk.' ... I am still standing, I am still fighting, I am still speaking out, and I am still gay."

Kathy Griffin, who was in Washington at the behest of HRC to meet with members of Congress about DADT repeal, was also at the rally. When asked by Choi if she would march with him to the White House, Griffin responded, "Of course!"

Neither Griffin nor Solmonese was seen at the White House protest, however.

Gay rights activist Robin McGehee was arrested after she had apparently helped the two discharged soldiers handcuff themselves to the fence. An officer who arrested McGehee said "I can't say anything" on why she was taken into custody.

Talk about your poor timing. Can't we gays ever get anything right politically? We really need a new PR firm... icon_confused.gif

I think this is good to keep our issues up front as the WH and Dems worry about the elections. They need to pass some stuff to be sure to get our votes, and not just legislation for other groups.

I hope no one is seriously outraged by this. If you chain yourself to the White House fence, you WILL be arrested.

But I still love Lt. Choi, and hope DADT gets repealed soon.

I would think that we all expected him to get arrested. I think that is the point..to take a stand and make sure this issue does not get hidden....now lets see what we can do about getting him released.

Given that this is being discussed as civil disobedience, I imagine both Lt. Choi and Capt. Pietrangelo knew that they would be arrested. Furthermore, if this is civil disobedience, we can expect them to plead guilty (part of the point of civ.disobd. is to point out the government's flaws by fully accepting the legal consequences of one's actions).

I'd be more supportive of them chaining themselves to the White House to stop the wars, not for their right to participate in them.

There was a time when our movement was pro-peace. Now, we want the right to travel to foreign places and kill brown people. I don't get it.

When he dies, Choi's balls should be bronzed and put on display in the Smithsonian.

I have the greatest respect for Choi and the others that got arrested. But, like others here, I have to wonder about the timing? Healthcare will be voted on this week (and if it passes, we as gay citizens could use that to our advantage) and then the economy and aren't the senate and house breaking in the coming weeks?

I think Kathy Griffin was involved (unintentionally) and recording for her D List show. Dan's timing may have been inspired. The talks for DADT are ongoing. His actions bolster the amount of coverage DADT gets. I have to think it was a large part of her crowd that gave Choi such a large audience for his performance. I think he's done well.

I love this man... wonder if he's single.

Also, I wish we'd see more of this from our movement. This is probably the most effect form of non-violent protest we could use.

I'd also like to see more marriage drives, where single gays marry single lesbians, and have a divorce as soon as their states will allow.

I know this is about gay rights and everything else comes 2nd. But I'm still proud as a fellow Asian that it's an Asian dude doing it. We Asians tend to be seen as a group that shys away from political stuff. Gald someone can stand up for their belif.
