perhaps if this gets enough media attention it will do what it's supposed to do: deter people from attacking marginalized people. i don't like to say i hope they go to jail for five years, but i do hope they go to jail for five years (if they are found guilty in a fair trial).

I hope more witnesses step forward and the culprits are given a harsh sentence to show that there is no prejudice in law.

It will be enlightening to see what happens in regards to the Matthew Shepard Act. Lucky man to have witnesses and recordings.

When they get to jail, their pretty looks will serve them well.

The victim did the right thing trying to help another person. Unfortunately he got beaten. Also was a 3 on 1 fight. I'd suggest everyone get some self defense/martial arts training. Most of the big gym chains have free classes as do the YMCA and such organizations. The classes are fun (so I am told) and a bit of a work out. There are several styles of self defense that are not the aggressive sort but defensive and geared toward disabling your attacker long enough to get away from them. Although not for everyone I have a concealed carry permit and did take a class put on by an ex-special forces dude on how to maintain control and possession of the weapon in a struggle. I also was given a brick bat and a telescoping brass wand by a couple retired cop friends and shown how to use them. Both are considered concealed weapons (as are brass knuckles) but I refuse to be someone else's victim.

    Karma?

3 dirtbags beat a gay man and then go to prison filled with thousands of hardened criminals/felons looking for a quick fuck, date, or prison companion.

On a side note, I love the people in the picture watching and doing nothing to help.

The marital arts / self defense class advice is good. A concealed carry permit is impossible in Chicago as gun ownership is essentially banned there. (The McDonald vs. Chicago Supreme Court case may overturn this)

RowBuddy saidWow. That whole area of the Red Line is a fairly gay friendly zone. But seeing as the guys doing the beating were from Evanston they might have been rich boys coming back from Lincoln Park/Wrigglyville and wasted. Evanston is the very affluent area of just North of Chicago where Northwestern University is.

hmmm, Rich and affluent seems to be the key words here. they will probably get off after some bs contrite faux apology.
