Whether it's latent or not, there is no question that one of the key forces driving the Tea Party movement is race. These are a bunch of angry, grossly uninformed older white people (I read a recent article that stated only 2% of the teabaggers knew the stimulus bills included tax cuts). Their ignorance of the issues make it that much easier for Glenn Beck to scare them. The actions of this past weekend (shouting the N and F words at members of congress, actually spitting on members of congress) are really showing these people who what they really are. Bill Clinton's health plan was way more far reaching than Obama's yet there is a vitriol being aimed at Obama that Clinton never saw. Why is that? The obvious answer is these people are afraid of the black president. Where were these people during the run-up to the Iraq war? If you're all about runaway government spending, that seems like the biggest waste of government spending in history. The sad thing is the Republicans can't really denounce the teabaggers because they fear losing them as a voting block.

that, and there is a new infrastructure of hate now that was not around when clinton was president. in fact, i think because of clinton there sprung up hate talk like rush and eventually hannity and beck and coulter et al. the internet wasn't what it is now either...crap flies around at an astounding pace.

back in the day, we listened to george will thoughtfully criticize the administration of carter and clinton. now, where is george will? who listens to moderates any more? rush and company are defining the GOP like no one else...an entire party fueled by nothing more than an entertainer masquerading as someone who knows making money spewing hate. lincoln must be ready to dig up JWB's grave and have him shoot him again.
