Any former football players out there with coming out stories with their teamates or just any experiences you had with being gay on a team?

Ive played for like 3 years and none of my teammates know. Not sure how Id wanna do that if ever but I have read some really inspirational stories about athletes coming out and what not....

i still play and i know some know about me but most dont or i think they dont. and the way i see it my sexuality has nothing to do with my performance on the field. i would tell who ever asked me but i really dont think it is a issue as long as it doesnt bring any drama to it or negative energy. i am there to catch the ball score touchdowns and hit people so i figure i do that then what is the problem.icon_cool.gif

I didn't come out until after college.
Not officially out to my IM team these days, but I think some know/suspect.
Especially since we've scrimmaged with my gay team.

For those still interested in playing - in a gay environment - check out:

    My gay team:

Note that there is a gay football tournament coming up at the end of April in Cleveland (part of they pre-Gay Games SynergyFest) and another in Chicago the last weekend of June.

If you are interested in playing but don't have a team... talk to me!

thanks for the responses. It definatelty shouldnt make a difference, but I just feel being in SC would not go well with coming out on a fball team

I played division 1 lacrosse in college and while I wasn't out, I know that several teammates knew/suspected. Still got named captain my senior year!

I'm sure most would've been cool with it, but I didn't feel like we needed the drama/focus on me brought into the locker room when there was so much else to focus on.

I swam (and was out) in college. Well, I came out my sophomore year to everyone. Didn't affect anything at all. I had the distinction though of being one of the "stars"(wow, that makes me sound like a total douchecake), so personal performances backed me up any more than any squabbling over the whys and the hows of my sexuality. Now, for a while I was dating a lacrosse player who was NOT out, and didn't want to come out. He feared that as an auxiliary player, he would be ostracized from the team. Personally, I feel he was over-reacting a bit, this was after all a very liberal campus, and the team already knew that he & I were "friends". It was such an interesting dichotomy to see us with my teammates, where we could be open and intimate with each other if we so chose, to us being with his teammates, where we had to work to keep up the facade of being "just drinking buddies."

You'd know best how your teammates would handle it. Luckily, mine were for the most part very understanding and cool with it.

My completely honest advice: Stop reading about inspirational stories. Be one.

in Texas, hs , d2 football elsewhere, not out and never even considered it.

always heard rumors flying around locker room about who might be or not; or who hooked up with a guy ... even heard a guy quote the 10% rule, knowing there 'had to be at least one gay on the team'

came out to a few afterward privately - we dont speak now

i wasn't out in my high school days, but it was fun.

I was a DB and the team captain my senior year and living near Nashville, I couldn't really afford to be out at the time.

Of course, if I knew then what I do now, it'd likely be different.

Football and wrestling in high school, wrestling and a year of football (then switched to boxing) in undergrad.

Wasn't out in high school, but regularly hooked up with a couple guys on our crosstown rival team and we'd wear each other out. All on the DL.

Senior year, the night before our big game with each other, we were out in the woods going at it and they thought it would give them an edge in the game to tie me up with duct tape and leave me out there, it was 2 the next afternoon before I got free and hitchhiked back into town.

    And we won the game.
