Hey, Its been a few months since I got on Real Jock. I sprained my ankle twice since November. So basically I have been laid up alot. Taking care of a severely ill mother and getting no exercise, you can imagine that I have gained weight. Anyway, excuses aside, has there been others who sprained their ankle and how did they get back into exercise without injuring themselves?

I returned to the gym in late January but reinjured myself. I have been approved to go back to the gym now but I am a little worried about rstressing and provoking the injury. What have others done in the same situation to wean themselves back into fitness?

I have weak ankles! It sucks but I have learned to walk very carefully and watch every step, but it still happens! I find that using the ankle as soon as possible after spraining it helps alot. (As soon as the excruciating pain lets up!) Since I have been going to the gym regularly it hasn't happened! I think squats, lunges, calf raises and deadlifts strengthen your ankles. Also, a physical therapist suggested this exercise...

Play catch with a friend standing on one foot, have them toss a ball so you have to reach for it, not just stand there and catch it. I do that sometimes too. Try it!

    And, watch your step!! icon_wink.gif

I will try it. I have been getting back into leg exercises ,squats and stuff but keeping the weight low ... not trying to go buck wild. I have been doing the recumbent bike and biking outside since the weather has been good here. I was told to keep to avoid the elliptical trainer or treadmill for a while until its fully healed ( 8 to 12 weeks) I am on about week 8.

    Thanks for the advice
