Wing-nuts-people on the lunatic fringe of politics are winning in America. A new pole shows just about puts it beyond doubt.

Released a few days ago, it showed that 40% of Americans believed Barack Obama is a socialist, a third think he's Muslim, three out of 10 fear "he wants to turn over the sovereignty of the US to a one-world government", and 14% agree that the President "may be the anti christ phew!

Can a whole country go crazy it makes you wonder.

Australians, thank goodness, are still pretty sane when it comes to politics. Plenty of us are unimpressed by Kevin Rudd, or have less than flattering views on Tony Abbott, but we don't go overboard.

You have to be careful in believing what the news media says and as for polls, you need to keep in mind in how many people are being polled out of the percentages polled. Not all Americans are right wing crazies. Don't believe everything the news media says because it has a bad habit of sensationalizing things just to make them seem more newsworthy. Yes the right wing tea baggers and the religious right wing are making a lot of noise and polluting the air and getting a lot of media attention. That is highly unfortunate because there are still a significant majority of Americans that are open-minded and fair. To judge all us Americans as right wing lunatics would not only be highly irresponsible but very unfair. Every country has its right wing lunatic fringe.

The U.S. also has left wing crazies! That's what makes me proud to be a U.S. citizen. We live in a crucible of ideas where tolerance and openness are essential to our joint progress. If both did not exist, the discussions and protests would not exist either. You'd hear nothing about them!

In nations with fewer population centers and almost no diversity in ethnic and racial backgrounds it may be easier for harmony to be maintained. In the U.S. we are given choices and opportunities which even in this poor economy are sought out by many from around the world.

I'm sure the U.S. looks chaotic from the point of view of other educated world citizens - but don't give pop polls much concern. The U.S. has well over 300 million residents and most "news" polls check with less than 1,500 people. Most of those surveyed have land-based telephone lines (nearly a thing of the past in LA) and many polls have people who have opted-in to be contacted. Read the methodology carefully if you want to find the kernel of truth. But I wouldn't bother reading polls at all.

The chaos and openly simmering tensions between ideological groups in the U.S. is the greatest proof that liberty still exists in our unique, melting-pot nation.

Oh I am careful about polls. Someone here not long ago posted that 50% of people from CA support gay marrage. My question was did they ask every person eligible to vote in CA and 50% of them said yes.

I have been coming to RJ long enough now to know that America is not full of right wing crazies, in fact it seems the left wing wing nuts out number them.

But to me this article was not all about the right wing, it was about the left too.
