I think he's referring to this:

It's really horrifying. I consider myself a Catholic, that's how I was raised, and I still love many of the traditions and rituals, but this Pope leaves no doubt that the Church is a corrupt institution more interested in maintaining it's power than protecting children.

I don't know what to say about this that hasn't already been said. The behavior of the church's leadership in these matters is a matter of worldwide shame and an appalling abdication of responsibility, to say nothing of morality.

I have never been a Catholic, so maybe some would say it's not my place to speak out. But of course everyone with a conscience should condemn the way horrible, abusive acts were hidden and covered up by anyone, but especially those who claim to follow Christ, the one they cite as the source of their morality.

I remember her tearing the picture of the pope in the early 90's and my folks telling me she was cazy and seeking publicity.

Oh, little did they know. I love sinead o'connor.

It's embarrassing at this point. Pick your scandal, Ireland, Germany, or Wisconsin (or maybe the bigoted expulsion of a child of lesbian parents from Catholic elementary school).

That Pope needs to resign immediately, and the Catholic leaders really need to re-evaluate the importance of not allowing priests to get married.

I'm just disgusted with the Pope, but not necessarily with Catholicism. When I was living in New York, my best friend's parents, who were very active laypeople in the Catholic church, held a prayer vigil for the people who were suffering child abuse at the hands of priests. I was invited to attend, and the place was packed.... some of the people were sufferers and some were just people who needed to show some solidarity with the motive behind the vigil. I was impressed... I hope they are doing it again. THOSE people were true Catholics, as far as I am concerned. If Jesus were to come back, hopefully he'd see them and say, "Well, at least SOMEBODY got it right."

....as if there was any doubt about the true nature of "organized religion" as a "man-made" tool to control the ignorant masses....along comes the current pope and the ongoing abuses and corruption......the "original message" of Christianity may have value but the message is lost and moot among the perversion and ignorance of the dogma and secrecy ...sorry about your luck as a "catholic", but the metaphoric wheels have fallen off the wagon...AGAIN! icon_eek.gif

Pouncer saidWhat's going on is the sordid story of a mediocre Bavarian bureaucrat (now the present Keeper of the Keys of St. Peter), failing to admit his central role in the international Catholic cover up of child rape and torture that has blighted just about every nation from Ireland to Australia.

Banal as Ratzinger may be, his career in the Church is one of distinguished crime and insult.

You know I always said it takes a very special kind of evil to look a sick and dirt-poor country like Cameroon in the eye; and tell them that condoms present an even worse problem to them than the AIDS which is currently killing infants in their cribs. And this crime is multiplied tenfold when the man doing the lecturing is an obscenely wealthy aristocrat with his Gammarelli linen finery all decked about his neck.

I think a Christian attempt at a resurrection of this moribund church is thankfully almost impossible. And if the best this current "pope" can do is send a guarded and cowardly letter to the bishops of Ireland without acknowledging his own responsibility in this travesty, then I think it's high time that he found himself a dishonourable grave.

    Yeah, what he said.
