Farmers are destroying their strawberry crops in Florida because usually they get a $1.00/ lb, but because the price is only .25, they said it is more economical to destroy them then harvest them. This is terrible. What is our country coming to--just a bunch of selfish jackasses. At least let the poor people eat them. I just can't believe this.

They would go out of business harvesting them apparently at $0.25 per pound. So they arent being selfish. They have to. Unless you intend for local poor people to just come thru the fields and eat them.

Good point hardonguy. They should open their fields up for poor people to come and pick. There are probably poverty groups that would be interested, and you know, they make great pies among other things.

(as well, many on here have said that the poor are fat etc because of a cheap but poor diet. Well, this is healthy.)

No such thing as a poor farmer these days. Large corporations now own most crop farms. A poor farmer stores and holds for better times (canning, jellying, freezing). That mythical poor farmer is an endangered species.

The government is so lame, useless and f@cked up that they'd probably let the poor sue the farmers who allowed them to eat for free if they got sick from their strawberries.
Bottom line: the farmers can do whatever they want since the crop belongs to them. It might be good if the big industrial farmers to go out of business so that we might be able to buy strawberries that have some taste. Right now, most strawberries are plump, deep red, full of pesticedes and tasteless.

The farmers need to earn of living. I am tired of everyone calling everything greedy. Usually it comes from the greediest people (and they usually claim to be liberals).

You might be right, but not 100%. There are more than you think there are out there.

    You are WRONG, davepalen.
    You write -
"I am tired of everyone calling everything greedy. Usually it comes from the greediest people (and they usually claim to be liberals)."
    BS.
This post was started by hardonguy - one of the most rabid right-wingers on RJ, and he was one of the ones complaining about the "selfish jackasses" who are destroying their strawberry crops.
Greed is not a liberal quality.
    It's a Republican hallmark.

Greed comes in every political stripe, so can we let the political slant go on this? icon_wink.gif

This is about food and access to it.

I guess this means less work for crop dusters.

...so much for my next dream job (love flying those planes). icon_sad.gif
