I do enjoy Stephen Fry very much. May be my favourite British public intellectual.

Also if one looks up Hitchens, Fry, and Debate, and maybe Free Speech, you can find the entire debate (more like a discussion) on youtube I think.

I listened to it a long while ago and it is definately worth a listen for anyone who is interested in free speech and issues of religion and society, like blasphemy laws.

Funny you should say that. Most descriptions of heaven I have ever heard have sounded more hellish than anything else.

If the god of the bible is real... I'd rather go to hell than spend eternity with such a character.

A statement like that implies that you KNOW what happens after death... if anything.

    Arrogance.

I stand by my message even after--especially after--reading the 'good' book itself.

lol.... omg... and so another athiest vs. believer thread begins! Enough is enough. If Hell exists in the Christian sense, then we'll all be there (cocksuckers arent welcome in heaven apparently... and my what an orgy hell will be, lol). And if the athiests are right, then it doesnt even matter.

So quit fighting with each other and accept each other's beliefs.

    Respect!

I know i hear the question alot that if God is a loving god and he is real why would he send you to hell. I thought about it and heard a message about this topic and really he does not. The truth is that you do and hell is a place were you are separate from God for eternity. I don't know were i'm going with this but it was just a thought i should let out.

I listened to some of the discourse myself. It was some of the most torturous 5 mins that I have ever wasted. Such effluvium of ignorance and BS. I was left to wonder if either party actually believed the other existed.

as Al Ghazali said: " without God men and will give way to every and all bestial indulgence of their appetites"

truly it would be a case of homo homini lupus!

Silly, God is Avacados, Guacamole is man's interpretation of God. Which is that God needs a bit of spice and homo-genizing!

I don't think anyone has been disrespectful. I don't think anyone is fighting.

Why does society think that discussions on religion should be "off limits?"

Why can't people openly criticize or support religious views?

I have every right to want to discuss religion because it plays such a huge part in politics/policy.

Obama, Bush, Clinton, etc. would have all lost the elections had they openly stated that they are non-believers. I want to know why faith (belief without testable hypotheses and evidence) is admirable... and why evidence is not nearly as powerful.

And the Lord saideth long haired hippies shalt not read revelation and shall be turned to pillars of salt.

    Book of Brit, Chapter Uno.

But seriously, we're all intelligent enough these days to know that if there is a God, there simply can't be a Hell. And that Revelation (and Genesis) are essentially metaphorical.

    Aren't we?

That's some crazy shit. Politicians here are actually mildly embarrassed when their religious leaning are revealed.

Why? There appear to be many quite civil atheists. What the hell are these bestial indulgences?

In a world without God, people would still find shit to bitch about, disagree with each other, and start wars...and they'd find something/someone else to blame it on.

So it really wouldn't be much different.
