I Knew I Loved You Before I Met You

Two months ago, still being single, I made the mistake of joining a group of friends at a piano bar for the evening of Valentine's Day. For whatever reason, my judgment (or lack thereof) really did get the best of me that night.

After ordering a round of rye and gingers, we proceeded to listen to the various songs that the different amateur pianists performed. My friends started insisting that I play something also. I politely declined.

At their further prodding and since the piano was now empty and given the rather quiet atmosphere throughout, I went ahead and sat at the piano. As I flipped through my mental list, I decided on a "forgettable song for a forgettable night".

As I started the song quietly but assuredly, I paid no attention to my surroundings, I even managed to hit all of the notes and ripped right through the song very nicely.

As the last notes faded away into oblivion, I looked up and was caught by surprise at the sight of a half dozen couples slow-dancing on the floor in front of me. I turned to one of my friends and whispered "WTF?"

His response? "I guess you've forgotten what day it is today."

Yeah..for me...Valentines Day has gone into oblivion!! That was a great story though....although it doesn't surprise me that you had people dancing to your music!!...Besides they have to dance on their feet!

I think that is the best Valentines Day story I've ever heard.
It's like finding a penny tales side up and turning it over for someone else... or maybe unintentionally kicking it over. What a lovely Valentines gift you gave everyone at the piano bar, what a lovely gift to share in general.

I've been wooed for the past uncountable Valentine's Days, it's nice but sometimes it feels contrived. When you're alone at least you know you're in good company, no one loves me like me... that's what Valentines Day reminds me, does that make me a cynic?

The only Valentines Days that mean anything for me are the ones that happen year after year with the same person... everything else is emotional gratuity.
