    Daily mail - 31st March, 2010 -

The Council for Greater Manchester sent in a 14 year old boy into a pet shop owned by 66 year old Joan Higgins to buy a goldfish. Ms Higgins sold him the pet, and ended up in Court, where she was fined £1,000, placed under curfew, and electronically tagged for two months. She escaped jail by a narrow margin. This form of punishment normally goes to a far more serious criminal or thug. The cost to the taxpayer for the prosecution was £20,000.
The boy who bought the fish was sent by the Council after someone complained that Ms Higgins sold a gerbil to a girl with a learning disability - although the complaint was not upheld in Court, since rodents of any kind were not stocked for some months before the complaint was made.

This is Political Correct Britain, steeped in Health n' Safety, most, if not all of it dreamt up by the nation's brightest academics and professionals.

Is it like this in the USA?

I'm Canadian and even I know the Daily Mail appeals to the reactionaries and BNP types...

If it were widespread then yes a problem.

The sale was a breach of a new law passed by our Government about Animal Protection Rights. This law now declares that one must be 16 years and over before buying a pet - for the pet's own safety.

And no, I'm not making this up, neither is this an April Fool's joke. This is real serious stuff. The same topic was also broadcast on the BBC 6 o'clock News tonight (31st March).

According to the paper, the gerbil was placed inside a paper cup in a cafeteria to prevent it running away.
It does not add up. Over here at least, anyone with a learning disability goes out with a supervisor, who would have bought the pet herself for the girl and ensured its safe transport home. This could be the reason why the complaint failed to stand in Court.

A friend of ours from Manchester (he pronounces it MAHN-chestah) has a shop here that sells all kinds of Brit stuff. I love the John West kipper fillets. He also has Brit newspapers, so I suppose I should drive over there, not far, and see what they say about this. I'll report back...

This case illustrates how insane life has become here in the UK. We are shackled by daft legislation in almost every area of our lives - and I don't think it will be any better even if there is a change of government next month. The crazy thing is none of it actually protects the vulnerable.

Absolutely! The imbecility of this law and the prosecution which resulted on a poor grandmother who never had a criminal record in her life shows the idiocy of those who are in authority. That was why I posted this topic.
