Finding someone to hang with might be hard.

As far as where to stay and how much cash you'll need...all depends on your habits. There are cheap places like Beck's Motorlodge, Best Western, and other motor lodges, but high end places too like Nikkos, Hilton, etc. Most of the expensive stuff will be around Union Square.

Lotsa great food and you'll need money for that. Same with shopping. Plenty of bars and every scene you can think of. Check out Muir Wood...its the redwood forest 20 miles north of the city (tours daily from the city). Golden Gate Park is one of the largest urban parks in the world and doesn't cost a dime to check out. Dumps you out at the ocean too.

    Hello,

I just moved to SF in Jan. from Sydney and I'm warming up to things here.

Places to stay the cheapest would be hostels and you can find them on hostels.com by location.

There are a lot of great things to do here.

If you want someone to hang with and show you around, depending when you are here I would be glad to show you around. I had to show one of my UK friends around a week ago.

I don't have a lot of free time but I'm sure that I could work some time out.

I had a really nice banana split at The Bi Rite Creamery, which is an easy walk from the Castro district. Another good place for American desserts is Tartine, which is close as well.

I suggest staying at a hostel, you will meet some really great people and come home with some great stories. (Gawd, I have a ton). Plus, it's cheap. When I go visit there, I'll stay there a few nights to have fun then go visit my bro in the burbs to get family time in and recuperate.

icon_lol.gif got a lot to learn my friend - I visited this place so manty times before settling/living here for almost 2 yrs now.

    Check www.Hostleworld.com - to book your hostel (it's a cheap/inexpensive student hostel/hotel for accommodations.)

The Castro - is a very gay district in the middle of San Francisco - you will find a lot of different guys (from nerdy, to bears) cruising other guys. If you have sex, use a Condom, it's known in SF that the Aids effect broke out in the 80s.

Get a gay travel guide book or visit www.SanFrancisco.com or read up on guides on SF in yahoo or orbitz/travelocity to familiarize yourself with the city.

Have a nice trip and time here in SF. icon_cool.gif

you might also educate yourself on the mass transit system in SF, and the lay out of the area(s). getting around by car can be difficult, if only not knowing the area and where to park the car.

restaurants, i enjoyed Emmas' for breakfast, Castagnolas' for lunch ( go upstairs, cafeteria style great seafood salad and chowder with sourdough bread, and a nice view overlooking the fishing boats ) for dinner i prefered italian, Basta Pasta, and Little Joes' and Poppa Joes, were both good, walk through little italy and savor the smells from the restaurants and bakeries. cable cars will take you through some areas where they run, and if like in little italy, they are where you want to travel, it is a fun and memorable experience.

have to second the muir woods suggestion, not far across the golden gate, so you get to travel the bridge as a bonus.

castro, is home to many gays and lesbians, if you are looking for company, if you are open to it, you will find it. people were very friendly at the businesses when i was there.

i hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip!

"Castro?" You never heard of the Castro? And you call yourself "gay"? icon_lol.gif

Honey, it's our Mecca. It's where coming out of the closet began (at least in the US).

Go see the movie, "Milk". Not only is it a good movie, but it will give you some good information on the history of homosexuality in San Francisco and it's coming of age in the late 60's-early 70's.

I hope you have a wonderful time here!

But yea depending what you wanna do that's how you gotta plan how much money to take.

Also don't forget to visit San Francisco City Hall and stop by and say hi To Harvey Milk.

from your posts, it seems like you are maybe a little lonely, as i was, looking more for GAY friends and for your family/ friends to accept you. i suspect, its not really about travel or wanderlust or sourdough bread or bi-rite or the dildo shops on castro.and thats fine, youre yet so young. maybe youre mother is right, you might not be ready for an international trip by yourself. maybe something local, to get away from them for 2- days, at first?
if you do come to SF and are unable to meet people/ or find friendly local guides, it may hurt your feelings and may make you feel more isolated.

and lastly, please avoid BECKS motor lodge.

Check out couchsurfing.org It's another way to meet people and possibly get sleeping accommodations for free.
