"I'm not turning anybody away, that would be unethical," he told the Sentinel. "But if they read the sign and turn the other way, so be it."

    He really isn't refusing anyone.

But what he is doing is unethical from a medical stand-point... at least in my eyes.

HAH! That's likely his real motivation -- his bottom line. So few doctors left who actually care about medicine. If you read their professional journals, a good part of them are about investment strategies, what country clubs to join, what luxury homes and automobiles to buy, what vacation homes to choose. Concerns about health issues are nearly squeezed out. Do read them, as I have, and judge for yourselves.

I did not read the story, but I would think the state licensing board would cite the doctor.

Having said that, being someone who has been involved in work with the medical comunity for a long time, I believe there will continue to be the type change I've seen: doctors at the top of their field migrate out of areas with high medicaid rate or just poverty. They move into areas with a level of affuence. They also limit new patient intake and tend to see fewer patients as their career progresses.

In most states, doctors have no legal obligation to see any given patient. As demand increases, there is no gurantee ability to pay will mean you see a doctor.

I do not blame doctors....They deserve to get paid. From what I know....They will be getting only 32 dollars a visit under osamacare. This is not just pay. Whgat doctors will want to settle for that.

These guys and women go to school, and uni for how long, yes they have done the hard time to receive a good pay. Gosh at $32:00 a visit then they have to take out tax, and insurance, and costs that may make it to $15:00 a visit, ridiculous. It amazes me the amount of Democrats who Voted in Obama, yet they love the republican lifestyle, and love it even more when they don't pay for it. yet resent those who have done the hard work at Uni, to get a good job, to support their own lifestyle.

I'm also amazed how many people are not also picking the shit out of the lies that where said by the democrats to get this passed either.

I just praise God I'm an Aussie living in the land of Oz, and not in America, and I get to call one of the worlds most livable cities home too, and if we are smart we will learn from the way the Democrats have fucked up the American health care.

Should I just turn away when I'm ordered to fight a war that I view as unjust?

I'm glad you live in Oz, too. Honestly, I'm glad you're as far away from America as you can possibly be.

Back on the subject at hand, I know three physicians in Canada. One's a surgeon and two are GP's. They make good money; not great, but not bad. When asked if they're in it for the money, the responses are a resounding "No."

My partner is a physician in NYC, who also happens to have a lot of friends in the medical community - neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, oncologists, etc., etc. We often have some of his friends up to the apt. for drinks, and have all discussed health care reform over the past year. I can tell you with 100% honesty that not one of them has expressed concern over this. Not one!

On the flipside, my partner has a couple friends working in pharma. that are irate over the reform ... like spitting blood angry, and that makes me smile.

What misleading reporting? His thread topic? He just echoed the words from the article itself as posted: "Doctor Jack Cassell Refuses To Treat Obama Supporters"

And when the sign on the doctor's door says: "If you voted for Obama ... seek urologic care elsewhere" that would tend to sound like he's declining to treat Obama supporters.

But then Cassell did issue this nonsensical statement: "I'm not turning anybody away, that would be unethical," he told the [Orlando] Sentinel. "But if they read the sign and turn the other way, so be it."

That makes no more rational sense than if he were talking about a "CLOSED" sign on his door. And I can assure you this would be viewed differently if his sign instead read: "If you are Black ... seek urologic care elsewhere," signs or their equivalent that actually once did exist in parts of the US during my own lifetime.

I read some interesting blogs about this, and most of the doctor's supporters seem focused on First Amendment freedom of speech issues. But someone made the observation that people in professions like teachers, judges, police, and many others can't hang threatening signs on their office doors or vehicles for the public to read, as an expression of their freedom of speech.

A doctor is licensed & regulated by the state, and also must abide by professional ethics. What you say in your official capacity is often constrained in ways you are not in your private life. Plus this doctor isn't merely expressing a passive political view, he is implying a denial of his professional services based on that view. These are not just words, but an action associated with those words, an action which may be illegal and most likely medically unethical.

And Cassell himself seemed to be admitting that turning patients away for political reasons would be unethical for him, his defense being essentially "Yeah, I posted a sign that says don't come in, but you could come in if you really wanted to, because I can't turn you away."

Now how is an ordinary person supposed to know that, and how would any reasonable person interpret his sign? It says seek care elsewhere, not consider going elsewhere, doesn't even say please, just go elsewhere. Seems a pretty straightforward, unambiguous and easy to understand statement to me.

Greedy bastard... and yes, what he is doing IS unethical. He may not be refusing to treat them, but he is creating an environment that forces them to decide whether or not to accept treatment based on things not related to their medical condition.

    What an asshole!

How about a source for what you claim to know? Otherwise, we're left with the suspicion that you might be making something up in order to scare people into opposing the Congressional bill.

Then again, from what I know, osamacare (heh heh heh) is going to require the use of leeches to withdraw blood. Also, it will bring back phrenology as the main application of neuroscience. Amputated limbs will be sold to dog food manufacturers. Plus, anyone past the age of 65 will have to prove their life is worth shit in order to receive Medicare. Meanwhile, illegal immigrants will receive free care, including plastic surgery to make them look more Caucasian.

A doctor in private practice has the right to treat whomever he wishes to treat. Also, those patients of his who support Obama have the right to terminate their support of that doctor.
