When Apple comes out with a product, the competition comes out with something better that includes what the Apple product lacks. For instance, I bought a different MP3 player than the ipod because it had a decent built-in speaker. Who wants to be tethered to a cord all the time.

HP, JooJoo, and other companies are coming out with tablets that have more features: camera, USB, etc. So just wait.

    Competition is a good thing.

Seems like another overpriced product from Apple that scratches easily. I think it would be nice when traveling though to check email

I do like the ipad, but will wait for the next generation. What it does for someone like me who really doesn't need a laptop will allow me to use my internet, movies, music, pictures, and very light word processing. I don't use all the other stuff that is bulit in my powerbook. I think they well hit that market very well. I do think it lacks a built in camera, usb ports, and an external battery compartment. That will be on the next gen. i'm sure!

My roomy saw the i-Pad and really wanted one. I took one look at the thing and said NO. Technology like that seems really cool.. until you get it home and put it through some practical application. Then it's just a paaaaiiiin in your ass.

I agree!! I actually this this is capitalist production/consumption at its worst! lol. At least for me the Ipad is ENTIRELY unnecessary. I'd much rather bust out a laptop instead of pulling out an 8 inch screen! It's just soooooo stupid. I don't even have a laptop or a cell phone with internet, and I've managed to survive for 21 years. If I needa read a newspaper or a journal article, that's what library and desktop computers are for...

What an awkwardly large and incredibly useless electronic device.

I'm almost ready to get one or two, to replace an aging G4 in the lab. And a whole shelf full of project notebooks full of hand-filled data forms. I just want to see some specific capabilities demonstrated first. Like, apparently there's no graceful way to exchange documents wirelessly with the server (unless it's done within an app, maybe?) or send them to the printer.

Very interesting that "numbers" for iPad seems to have a nifty new "forms" feature - no word on whether that's coming for the desktop version. And a Bento app is available. I just don't want to put a lot of work into trying to cram my system in to "numbers" or "bento" and then find out that it almost but not quite works.

*sigh* Me: "Can you demonstrate how this thing can link to a database on the server?" Apple Store Kid: "It plays games! and YouTube!" icon_rolleyes.gif

If I was a sociologist, I'd so do my thesis on the iPad.

I find it incredibly fascinating the intense feelings people have for or against this thing.

The ferocity, absolute certainly, and black-or-white division of people's opinions reminds me of...

    Oh my...

    ...

    Republicans and Democrats.

    Eeek!!!!

Staring down the abyss of a permanently polarized society, I remain

    Ig

PS My personal opinion? It's an amazingly magical game-changer, just like the iPhone. But I'm not buying one, just like I have yet to buy an iPhone.

Oh, PPS, the following is such a thread win:

I thought the real point of the iPad is to expand consumer consciousness and conversation. Thereby strengthening the entire tech industry. The whole Apple vs Microsoft vs Apple vs Google vs HTC vs HP vs blah blah blah only serves to more greatly line the pockets of almost all the players with something good to offer. (Poor Palm....)

I don't think apple was the first to announce this product and I wonder if they rushed it to market so they can seem to be the innovators. However, compared to some of the otehr similar products like the HP Slate (which runs Win 7) it does really seem lacking in features.

is this an extension of MS vs Apple eternal argument. ?

i'm not an Apple groupie , but i do like their products. I just never liked
being confined to a gated world.

so the iPad , i haven't tried one, haven't even touched one.
    so i don't know .
    yet i know i won't buy one , i need hiking equipment .

I went and took a look at them at the Apple store yesterday. They look cool, but I have so many friends with cracked iPhone screens and I imagine an ever larger multi-touch screen is going to be even more fragile. I guess we'll soon see how well it does.

I picked mine up yesterday. It's basically a big Itouch.
Everyone seems to be so critical of it.
It's just a new toy. It's fun, plain and simple.
    Cheers,
    Keith

It's not really new. These thigns have been around for a long time. Apple and the new ones comming out have sort of made them more attractive and consumer friendly, and has put advertising on it.

no, i don't "get it," and i'm a pretty loyal apple fan. what does this do that my iphone doesn't, aside from having a big screen? it seems like a glorified flatscreen. if it had all the capabilities of an imac and an iphone together i'd be salivating to get one... but for now... ummm... wtf?

Actually, when I heard about the Ipad....I thought about my soon to be 80 year old Mom.

I think this will be perfect for her....the big touch screen, easy applications. She uses her laptop for email, and playing card games online. She doesn't need much more than that, and honestly.....a laptop is overwhelming sometimes for her.

I will get her one for Mother's Day.

As for me, I am not sure.

From what I understand it doesn't even have WiFi yet? What's the use if it doesn't have that??? I understand a new version is being released at the end of the month??? Why are so many people going crazy for it now if a new and improved version is soon to come out????

It doesn't play Flash just like my Itouch.

What's the point if I can't watch porn on it? icon_sad.gificon_sad.gificon_sad.gif
