I literally don't understand how they can do this. I mean, really... where are they getting these whack-ass ideas? I've seen and heard more logical thinking on the 4th Floor of Lutheran General Hospital.

^ will that put them in a tizzy?

If I was still living in Athens, Ohio, I'd go over to counter-protest.

Thanks, CoolArmy..but we locals are taking a "don't give them any attention" attitude, although the local Chamber of Commerce printed up and made available to anyone signs that read "No room for Hate!"
    There were counter-protests planned.

However, I can't speak for the citizens of Boone County, where the mine disaster was. If I were those alleged 'christians' I'd be prepared to meet my maker if I was going to go there and picket the mine accident site or anywhere else. I think someone needs to hand them their asses.

Am I the only one that wants something terrible to happen to the Phelps family? Like his wife getting sucked up into a tornado or come down with some weird disease... just so I can say, "Oh look what God did to your wife! I guess she supported the homos after all".

    whatever. icon_rolleyes.gif

i'm pretty sure there have been crazy people before, they just didn't have websites and 24 hour news services to give them a stage.

like ann coulter, this stuff lives because it can. it may not go away by ignoring it (it's been around a while), but it will be shuffled off to the side where it belongs, appealing to an extremely small handful of people who just seem to hate everything and everybody. IMHO, the trouble isn't so much phelps, it's the people who listen to phelps.

this hate stuff is like crack....it's addictive as hell. you get a little, it feels good and you want more and more and more...and it spreads exponentially with the interwebz.

Here's an interesting idea my sister had on how they get their money for these things. Most of the Phelps family are lawyers who play it smart. If someone gets angry enough with them to sue (and believe me, people have) then they will not only win the case because of free speech rights but also have their court expenses paid for. This includes those members of Westboro present with law degrees.

The only difference b/t Westboro Baptist and the majority of other Christian churches is that Westboro actually says in public what most other Christian churches promote behind closed doors.

Works great in theory but it's not practical given the small amount of money Westboro would be able to walk away with. Westboro makes a lot of money from the silent majority supporters. There are plenty of pro-Westboro Christians in the world. Few are willing to put themselves out there in the physical sense, but they're happy to send donations to support Westboro's "righteous cause for Christ."

the miners and their loved ones aren't the type of people to take any shit off these fake christians...these "protesters" may get a rude reception from these grieving people.

I've I said it once, it's even more apparent that I need to keep saying it: see what happens when folks are indoctrinated from a young age into false belief systems? This is why any false belief system (religion, cult, etc.) is so VERY dangerous and these nuts need to be called out.

We need to start training our children to have truth / fact based belief systems instead of fairy tale creatures.

but don't you find it interesting that they use the same exact argument? they believe that YOUR belief system, the one that allows homosexuality, is false and they find it very dangerous. so much so that they feel the only way to stem the tide is to "indoctrinate" their children to keep things the way they believe they ought to be. they see us, and all of our efforts at education, to be an insidious war over the minds of their children. yes, they are going to fight back with everything they've got...even if it becomes absurd.

i fully agree with you that "false" belief systems (read: mindless, automatic, untested) are extremely dangerous. it is why we, as gay men trying to achieve equality, need to see where this kind of thinking leads...because it is easy for us to go down the same path.

If WBC goes into that mining community at an emotion-charged moment like this, they may not ever come back out. And whatever happens to them, I doubt a local jury would convict their assailants, and the Governor would pardon. WBC would be very stupid to do this.

These stupid people find comfort in party-line, non-deviating hate. You can keep yourself warm with good, thick hate - if you shut all the windows and doors and don't let any air or light in. Grown-ups know better. These people are despicable and ignorant, and they insult everyone with a brain. But they don't convince anyone, and in the long run, they probably unite people with decent minds, more than they cause any lasting trouble.

That said, I do hope the miners react...
