WARSAW — A plane carrying the Polish president and dozens of the country’s top political and military leaders to the site of the Soviet massacre of Polish officers in World War II crashed in western Russia on Saturday, killing everyone on board.

This is horrible. My thoughts go out to the people of Poland as they try to deal with the tragic results of this horrendous plane crash. It appears that any type of long distance travel is getting to be more dangerous.

The pilots were stupid. They should have diverted when the controllers told them the airport wasn't safe.
The sad part is that they took other lives with them.

Uhhhhh I don't even know what to say about this... Wow... Hopefully no corrupt pricks try to take advantage of the crippled Gov but that's unlikely.

They didn't. Just a bunch of them... which happens all the time including on Air Force One.

Poland has a Parliamentary system, unlike in the US, so that the real executive power is held by a Prime Minister and Cabinet. None of them were lost in this, although the Army Chief of Staff and some Deputy Ministers were killed, apparently, and many prominent people, including the head of their national bank.

A great tragedy, my sympathy to the Polish people. But their government and institutions should withstand this, since the "whole government" wasn't on that plane. An acting President has already assumed his constitutional role.

Still, a terrible emotional shock for the Poles. As a former Iron Curtain nation that first helped to openly oppose the Soviet Union and bring about its dissolution, these are very brave and strong people who will overcome this misfortune as they have others.

Hey guys, thanks for all the supportive responses.

As a Polish immigrant, I definitely feel a connection to my native country stronger than ever. It's news that is weirdly numbing- it's basically poof! and like the officials are gone, it's difficult to take in, realize, etc.

I basically woke up at 11 am and had a text from someone: "Did you see the news?"

    And I checked.

My FB status was just "oh my god" and I called my mom, who knew about this since 7 am, and cried a lot about this.

Most of my friends on FB expressed their concerns (most of them are Polish). At my university, I'm one of the few Polish people, however, some friends that I have seen today expressed sympathy toward Poland and let me know they care.

Weird, because I'm actually in a Polish for Native Speakers class, so I'll definitely be able to identify with the small group that we have there.

I emigrated in 2003, seven years ago.

Lech Kaczynski was a nasty homophobe, on the far right of European politics.

You don't talk badly about the dead, no matter who they were (especially someone who died in a non-peaceful way in an accident).

They lost so many important people. Sending out support to all the Polish RJers icon_sad.gif

My condolences to Polish people everywhere. The loss of so many of the country's leading figures, while they were on their way to such a historically and emotionally laden event is nothing less than shocking.

I watched a documentary on the Katyn massacre earlier this week, and was saddened to hear the news of the crash, especially after a visit to remember the the tragic incident. My heart and prayers go out to all in Poland, especially those who lost loved ones due to the crash.

Uhhhh does that go for all the nazis as well? The people who crucified Jesus... How about any child molesters? If all you are doing is stating facts... Assuming Tegga is stating facts; then is it really talking badly about the person? I love how absolutes have a way of backfiring...

He's only speaking the truth. The Kaczynski twins (yes there are two) have been notorious for their religious, right wing homophobic politics. just google Kaczynski twins and you'll find all kinds of stuff.

A really sad day was when they actually came into power. the surviving twin Jaroslaw, is in fact the prime minister of Poland... and a closet case according to this article

Unfortunate indeed. I have great respect for the polish people and their government and what they have achieved over the last 20 years. I'm sure they will sail through this challenge.

Then these forums should be a mine field. Look at the three posts above mine. Even yours contains an absolute by saying ALL absolutes backfire. The thread isn't for picking fights, if that's how you look at it than you guys won, I said something stupid. I'm so happy for you that you out-smarted a 20-year-old on an online forum. I bow to your superior intelligence.

    Back to Poland now?!

No matter the politics of those that lost their lives, which I am totally ignorant on, it is still a tragedy. My heart goes out to all of the Polish people for their loss. This is so sad.

I know virtually no one who supported or even liked Kaczynski and most of my friends were rather aggressive towards him, but yet again I know virtually no one who isn't shocked and sad for him.

    By the way,

There were more people like her on the plane.
